I would like to know if anyone has connected a tachometer to their LD with the V10? If so, how was it connected besides the usual 12v connection. My Excursion has a similar engine with a tach and I assume it is connected through the computer somehow.

John:

As for a tachometer on the V-10, I understand it is tricky because of the individual cylinder coils. I recommend you run a Deja News search on the rec.outdoors. RV-travel newsgroup, as some months ago someone described a way to do it.

Almost forgot - I have an EXCEL spreadsheet which gives revolutions versus speed in all gears. I got it after a long sharp grade in which the cruise control insisted on going 55 in second gear for quite a while and I wondered if I had accidentally overreved the engine. Turns out I hadn't, and the V-10 was designed to run at high revs. E-mail me if you want a copy.

Good luck

Gus Weber.

"LD's V10s are equipped with tachs."
Must be a new feature for 2001, my 2000 doesn't have a tach. The tone of the engine gives me a good enough indication...I am not running a race, afterall. Even while towing the 4,000 lb boat up steep grades, I haven't felt the need to manually downshift, except for a few tight switchback turns.

OUCH!

I've been to all of the RV shows in the Detroit area in the last couple of years and noticed tachs in all of them. In fact,I've crossed the tach off of my gotta-have list.

Better re-think that one.

Thanks for the warning.

HEY, anyone figure out how to put an aftermarket tach on a Ford V10?

My main reason for installing a tach in my new LD was not a worry about over reving the engine (after all, the V10 loves to rev, and the computer shuts off the gas before you get into "the red zone") but I wanted to keep the revs from getting too low and I didn't want to lug the engine.

I found the answer with a tack designed for diesel engines. It has a pickup that straps onto the alternator and picks up the rpm's from there.

I also have a short article from a Motorhome magazine that talks about "tapping" into the computer system. I never like doing that but will email a copy of the article to those interested.

Glenn, I would appreciate seeing a copy of how to tap into the computer for a tachometer. Please send a copy to

Is it possible that the new chassis ordered by LD will all have tachometers?  I, for one, would appreciate a tach, as it certainly provides a lot of useful performance information.
