Why the secrecy about E-mail addresses?

Some great questions on this board deserve replies that are too long to post, or have been beaten to death before. It would be great to be able to send a personal E mail so as not to take the time of other people. But every time I try, the person's E-mail address is listed as "private". People, I urge you to post yours on your personal profile page; you'll receive a lot more detailed information. Thanks Gus Weber

Gus, this is a public club - anyone can join, and personal info can be discovered without even that courtesy if a lurker so desires AND it shows in the bio. In addition, that bio is common to all the member's subscribed clubs, some of which may have more of a problem than we do here.

It is not inappropriate to post your e-mail and ask that someone you wish to correspond with answer with theirs - and I think most would be happy to in a private e-mail to you. Your one post of your e-mail address is much less likely to bring you grief than if you listed it in your bio.

Everyone should have a "spam" e-mail account so that you can use it for just this kind of instance.
Don't post your personal ISP e-mail account in clubs, chat rooms, or Internet forms you fill out use your new "spam" account. I personally have yahoo.com and hotmail.com e-mail accounts for those instances. At least you can still communicate without the chance of your personal e-mail account getting spammed. The beauty of both hotmail and yahoo accounts is that you can check your e-mail from any computer on the Internet anywhere. Those of you that have e-mail fears get a free "spam" account and post it in the club!

Steve,
I'm convinced. Please tell me how to change my email address in my profile. I found an edit button for other areas, but not the email address.

Betty

My name is not Steve but I can help you to change your profile which includes your e-mail address that you make public for members of the club. First click on the Options link in the bottom left side of your screen. A page with choices including Edit Public Profile opens; click on edit public profile link. A page will open entitled Public Profile for "your user name".
Click on the word edit next to your user name on this page. A page opens that says "your user name" Profile; click on Edit Profile Information. The page that allows you to edit your public profile opens. Next to your e-mail address is a black radio button and to the right is the word "change". Click on change. You will be asked for your user password. Put it in and hit submit.
The Review My Account Information page opens and it is here where you need to click on the button "edit" in the yellow backgrounded section entitled "Member Information". The next page is entitled "Edit Member Information for "your user name". You can change your user info here including your e-mail address. You will see your Yahoo Mail address followed by the first alternate which you can add or change. Make sure that here is where you only have "spam" e-mail accounts like hotmail.com, juno.com etc listed. DO NOT PUT YOUR ISP E-MAIL ADDRESS IN HERE AT ALL. Don't even put it in as your second alternate address; just leave that one blank.
Click finished and you're done. Now everyone in the club should be able to communicate by e-maiil with everyone else!

To add to my original message: After you go through all of these steps again, you will see your new e-mail address with the radio button in black next to it and a link marked non-varifyable under the address.
Click on the link; then click on the button on the next page to send verification. Yahoo will send an E-Mail to your new E-Mail address. You need to open that message and highlight the Confirmation Code in the message then hit "ctrl c" to copy it. On the page entitled Yahoo Account Information, in the box marked E-Mail Confirmation Code, click once and hit "ctrl v" to paste the code in. Then just type in your Yahoo password in the next box. Click verify. You are done. You may want to have two browsers open at the same time to make this operation easier. Also on the Edit Public Profile Page, make sure that the radio button is black next to "Yes! Display my E-Mail address on this profile". Now I promise you are really set. Send me a message if you do not understand anything I have written here.

If you don't verify, you will not be able to use that e-mail address in the Yahoo club. They want to make sure it is a working address.

That e-mail address listed for us IS the ISP e-mail address. It's been there for quite some time, possibly a year, and we haven't noticed any increase in SPAM....

....And not likely you will, from your membership in this club - note the lack of spam messages in this club.
However, your profile at Yahoo is the same for any OTHER clubs you join using it, and those clubs might be a problem.

Exactly! You don't get spam from friends or LD club members; it's when you fill out an online form or go to a chat room or use newsgroups that ususlly causes most of the problems. I never use my ISP e-mail when filling out any forms at any Web sites. That is what I use my yahoo.com e-mail address for. When we pick up our LD in September, we will begin to use our hotmail.com address as our only address so that we can check it from anywhere there is a computer on the Internet. In our case, it would not be a good idea to use our hotmail.com (non ISP) address on forms either. I only use my ISP address to do real important business or family/close friend e-mail. I really don't get any SPAM on my ISP address at all and that is because I have safeguarded it.
