Satellite Dish - opinions sought March 02, 2001, 10:59:43 pm Yahoo Message Number: 2388I'm glad to see satt-tv discussion here - I need to decide what to add to my ordered 26.5 MB.rjld614 -- will you pls tell me how to compare the mounted satt dish vs a portable. I'll bet a mounted dish will get hidden in trees sometimes. But the tradeoff is portable ONLY.How would you feel about portable satt and no mounted dish? Is the portable a big pain, so you only use it with extreme bother? Do you strongly prefer one over the other?Would it make sense to have a standard broadcast antenna supplemented with a portable dish?Experience and opinions will help me make my mind about my May delivery.....Thx John

The SONY has an indicator light to tell you when you are locked on. I will have both. The stationary one will be used when it is clear to get the sat. and the portable one when I need to get out from under a tree. I have a 75' cable and use that little light. It blinks rapidly when locked on the sat. The portable dish is not expensive. $65 or so.

So I went with the portable only and now find it to be a pain most of the time. Yes, sometimes it would be blocked (so that the extra lightweight portable for those times). When stopping for one night I don't bother with the portable and wish that I had the roof mounted one.Not sure though if you still get the broadcast antenna with the roof mounted satalite. Maybe someone could answer that.Glenn

Ed didn't talk me out of it, motorhome owners talked me out of it. I agree with what you are saying. It would be nice to get satellite during a short stop, kind of a stealth camping factor.Lazy Daze told me that the cable connection is satellite dish compatible. I think the coax has to be RG-6, so that is good. I'll have a better opinion after I buy and set up a portable system and use it for awhile.
