For those of you who have a dish, which TV services have you used? Have you been satisfied with signal quality and availability vs cost? Thanks in advance for any thoughts.Nathan 23.5FL in only 47 Days!
Re: SATELLITE TV SERVICE Reply #1 – July 19, 2003, 11:42:42 pm Yahoo Message Number: 24743Hi Nathan, I have a satellite dish in my 2003 MB and I use Dish Network. After some research, I found that Dish appears to be more RV friendly than DirectTV. They don't have problems with you taking your receiver from home and putting in your RV while you are on the road. I believe that Dish (and DirectTV) use spot beaming for the local channels, so if you travel far enough away from home, you won't get them. You can sign an RV waiver available from the company and pay an extra $5-6 and get network broadcast stations from NY, LA, etc. However, so far I have travelled all the way from the S.F. bay area up to Bend Oregon (about 500 miles) and I was still getting my local stations.Picture quality is very good and tuning in the satellite with the manual dish is fairly easy. You need a compass to find north and need to know the zip code of the area you are in. The receiver then tells you the direction and elevation to tune turn the dish. The only issue I have experienced is that in some campgrounds I have not been able to tune in the satellite due to obstructions from trees. Some people carry an extra portable dish to solve this problem.Congrats on your new upcoming LD!Mike S. 2003 26.5 MB
Re: SATELLITE TV SERVICE Reply #2 – July 20, 2003, 01:30:38 am Yahoo Message Number: 24750Nathan,We did get the automatic dish with our 2002 30'TB LD, but never got around to getting the receiver. We planned to, but since we can't use satellite at home, (we have cable) and after hearing about the problems RVers have with DirectTV, decided we'd try RVing without it.We don't usually boondock, but even when we have, there have only been a couple of times when tv reception with the antenna was so poor we couldn't get at least a couple of local channels reasonably well. When we get a site with a cable hookup, the tv picture is outstanding. Of course, if good tv reception is really important to you, it might be worth checking out DishTV.Sharon N.

Nathan, we have the manual sat. antenna, installed by LD, on our 2002 30', and it works great. We used Dish TV (Echo Star) and have 3 receivers at home and take one of them on the road. We don't get local stations once we get a day's drive away from home. The few times I have had to call the Dish folks I have found them quick to answer the phone; knowledgeable and eager to serve.Chris Horst Denver
Re: SATELLITE TV SERVICE Reply #4 – July 21, 2003, 08:31:10 am Yahoo Message Number: 24793We use DirecTV with our LD and have the EastCoast/West Coast feeds. We had the national PBS feed until our home city Des Moines Iowa got local channel service. The PBS channel was cut with DirecTV unable to reconnect it for us because of PBS regulations. When we are traveling, the strongest channel reception we receive on our TV antenna is usually a local PBS channel however. We were able to receive DirecTV all the way down as far south in Mexico as Saltillo by the way. That's almost half way into the country. We hear that Dish may give service even a little further south than that.Kent and Margaret Neveu Escapees Mexican Connection

When I was in Bushy creek Oklahoma, I tried but didn't get a reception. The other time in Arkansas no luck too, probably because I was under shade of huge trees. I'll let the "mother ship", check it out when I see them next week.

It's the only way I could get hubby to hit the road with me! The guy I bought my LD from used a signal gain meter to help dial in the signal...it works like a dream. Once I set elevation for zip code, I don't use azimuth settings at all, I just dial in the signal using the meter, usually takes me 30 seconds (except when Sarah was watching me!). The picture quality is exactly the same as if you were sitting in your living room. I use DirecTV which I've always been happy with.Sue ">lifewithalazydazerv-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com[Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

The signal quality is just as good as it is at home. Like Sue's husband, I don't think my wife would go on any extended trips without the dish. She is not a big a fan of the outdoors as I am.The system (Dish or Direct) you choose may be based on what type of programming you like. If you like sports, Direct has better sports packages, if you want the cheapest basic channel package, Dish would be the way to go. I don't think you can go wrong with either one.-Victor

I forgot to mention that we're Denver natives, living in Seattle, and die hard Bronco fans. The only way we can catch our Bronc's is via DirecTV. Go Broncos!!!S.
