Remote alarm thoughts...
Yahoo Message Number: 19436
Your thoughts on a capacitive proximity alarm are interesting. I could build one--though I suspect a passive IR might be more reliable--but I think I'd rather have physical (e.g., lockbox) security than a complex electronic/RF system that could fail due to tired batteries...or trigger falsely due to sferics or a passing trucker's amped-up CB. ;-) Sometimes simple solutions are best.

Actually, the proximity approach protects you for 1. graffiti and 2. break-ins. I will park the unit here in Oakland - It is safe, but it only takes one bad apple :) - typically, they do $500 damage to steal a $50 radio.

The passive IR is a good system and Radio Shack (did?) sells a 12v unit similar to the automatic light controllers we all know. But passive IR does have false alarms. An interesting variation is to have a light controller turn on a dim light *inside* the RV, or a radio.
Parked in a public place as I'm going to do, I dont mind being woken up occasionally, if I know I have a handle on vandals...There are many RV's parked on public streets around here - and my sense is that they dont get vandalized often. The reason: The vandal doesn't know who is inside waiting for him. Its much easier knocking off an empty car.
