Dash Cell Phone Holder
My cellphone holder broke. It was the type that mounted to the air vents but thinking of trying a different type. What do ya'll use?

I use this set up.  I have a ball mounted on the front of the dash near the radio.  Another ball is attached to my E-bike handlebars.  Another ball on my kayak.  Interchanges easily.  Super secure.

I use a magnetic one that clips to my air vent and magnetically holds my phone which has a Safe Sleeve case on it. They sent little discs to stick on the back of the case, I glued mine to the holder part of my case. So it always sticks.

I usually use my passenger's hand as a holder...

I use this one

  • Magnetic grip means I can attach/detach with one hand.
  • Qi charging means I don't drain the battery while using navigation apps

I put the suction cup on the center shelf between the cupholders.  The magnet grip on this isn't terribly strong, but if I arrange it so that the weight of the phone is resting on the shelf, it does just fine.

PROTIP:  if the suction cup loses it's stickiness, clean it with a little bit of alcohol hand sanitizer and it will stick really well.  (Maybe too well.)

Thanks everyone for your input. I don't really like the idea of the cupholder units since there are only two in the cab.  I like the versatility of the one suggested by Larry so am going to try that one. I'll report back after I get a chance to use it. Thanks!

Clean the dash area where the base will sit with alcohol before securing the holder.

We use this one attached to the left side of the windshield on the left side of the driver.   We attached it with it's suction cup which was a little sticky, it has lasted over a year through the roughest roads we have been on driving the Baja Highway.  We have driven our LD to Chaco canyon, the Baja is way rougher!  We have the original LD dash cover on our dash so attaching to the dash is not an option for us.  On the left side where we have it attached to the windshield is out of the drivers driving view so it does not interfere with driving even with it on and bright.  We have bought an additional unit and installed it in our Ford C-Max.  The vent style holders caused the phone to be cold or hot depending on the air from the vent temp.

Liam, that holder looks similar to the one Larry linked to, which I just received. Spent some time yesterday looking at possible mounting options (looks to be a good quality holder that provides a few different options and adjustments). Still not sure if it will be attached to the dash or windshield but will get it figured out before our April trip to the Morro Bay Kite Festival.

Going to try the holder with it attached to the windshield. The phone is used only as an engine monitor for the Bluetooth OBD link.

I don't use a cell phone holder, preferring to interact with maps/music/etc.. via carplay.

The radio in my 2003 is mounted well below my sight line, so I opted to use one of these that mounts to the windshield and rests on the dash.

This item looks to be very similar:

Bonus - it's an easy way to run a backup camera, using the access hole/grommet beneath the driver side foot well.   I had to buy a camera extension wire, but it was easy to run under the rig, up under the spare tire cover, and then I just slid the camera mount under the edge trim on the top of the spare tire cover.

One downside is that the camera isn't wired to activate as soon as you go into reverse (it can be, but I didn't).   On the plus side, I can use the screen to turn the reverse camera on and monitor the toad while driving.

I used one that made use of the CD port until I changed the radio. It works great as long as your music in on your phone and not on CD.

Thanks for your suggestion, John. I ordered that one also for use with our actual cellphones. The radio/ CD player is centered in the dash so that location should work out well.

We like having our cell phone holder like Greg's to the left of the steering wheel and out of the way to not interfere with driving but still in a good place for viewing for maps etc and easy to reach with your left hand.
