Velvac Mirrors
Greetings
I need to replace my passenger side Velvac
mirror.  Can anyone here give me a part number for a complete replacement?

Much appreciated. -- again!

Hi Lorna,

I *think* you are probably asking about the entire mirror assembly including the arm? I believe you have the same model year I have, 2003. On my rig, the arm fell off the mount on the driver side and there were no repair parts. When I called Lazy Daze, they suggested I replace the mirrors with the newer style Velvac 2020XG. It is important to note that the new style arm mounts with 4 bolts and 2003 was the first year for that mount (from Ford)

To answer your question, I used Velvac #715900 for the passenger side and #715901 for the driver side. These are for the 96" wide body and what Lazy Daze was using at the time but in a chrome mirror head finish. I wanted the mirrors to match on both sides.

I did an extensive write up on the Lazy Daze group. You can find it by searching for "exploding Velvac mirror". The post has the part# and what I paid around 10 years ago.

There is a Velvac part # that includes both the right and left side assemblies at a discount. #71589.

The company I ordered from is no longer in business. There is a company named Mill Supply that can help you with this. I am not certain that Amazon has this product. I really like these mirrors!

Good luck!

Hi Steve K (aka NuKamper); and Lorna.  A little history about the Ford mirrors. I think Terry Tanner had detailed this.  The ability for the Ford mirror arm to rotate was to fulfill requirements to make impacts with pedestrians less deadly.
As such it was only designed to fold up a few times, before the press on washer (concealed by a black plastic cap underneath) failed. The press on washer has 'tangs' that fit into a groove in the upright post and allow the mirror arm to rotate on the aluminum post.  As the arm is rotated it cuts into the post.  The internal spiral spring provides tension so it won't move with wind pressure. After a few times the mirror comes off. The spring makes it appear to 'explode' taking the part of the post with it. So you need to replace the post (and arm) and the mirror. If you are moving at speed the mirror probably won't be in good shape.
You don't want to fold up the arm routinely. Inviting trouble! at some random time. If you are lucky the mirror falls off in your driveway like Steve K experienced.
Some people have drilled up through the mount assembly and inserted a screw to prevent the arm from rotating.  To save someone, or stop damage from involving the door also, I would recommend a plastic screw to prevent major damage, or a small diameter metal screw.
I don't have this design feature (my rig is too old), so I haven't dealt with this issue directly.  I'll wait until somebody here can clarify that 'assist' screw installation.   RonB

Hey Ron,

I don't want to hijack Lorna's post and I do hope she read my reply. So often people get an answer and don't make any follow up about the resolution.

Back to the comment about the mirrors not being meant to fold in very many times. This is the first time I have heard anything about the mirrors not being able to survive repeated movement. I have ALWAYS folded in the mirrors when I change my engine oil to prevent a concussion when I stand up. Also when I cover the RV for the winter, I fold in the mirrors to prevent stress on the cover. And several service facilities have folded them in to fit into their lifts. It was an expensive replacement...

Hi Steve K, my way-back-when, wide-body 2003er bud!  Yes, I should probably get the entire thing.  Unfortunately, my LD is in storage right now, so I couldn't verify for the number of bolts -- I'll take your word for it!

I am familiar with Mill Supply and will call to speak with someone with a pulse and give them the information you have provided before ordering/paying.  (I screwed up long ago when I needed a replacement mirror not realizing left side, right side weren't the same as passenger side/driver side!!!)

Thank you so much for your help, Steve - nice to see you still here.  Happy trails,

I hope the info helps Lorna. The 2003 Lazy Daze class was certainly a big one! I think Lazy Daze was delivering 2 units per day back then. Seems like yesterday.

The 4 bolts per mirror refers to the mirror arm attachment to the door. The parts I referenced are for the 2020XG mirrors which are shaped differently that the mirrors our 2003 came with plus the lower mirror is a much larger wide angle mirror.

Good luck!

Yup Ed and Margee,

Back then you scheduled your delivery for morning or afternoon.  There seemed to be a limit to how many units could be produced based on some sort of limit on how many Lazy Daze was allowed to paint. I think that they were delivering 2 per day for and around 200 + units per year.

We had a time to delivery database. People would enter their order # and date and then the actual delivery date. There is a lot of great information in the old Life with a Lazy Daze Group. For those of you who have never read through the old group, it would be a revelation and education. I am not sure how many of us original owners from the period are still on the message board. It was a very active group! I am sure Larry and Lorna remember the time period. I sure do!

I remember Steve, 197000 miles ago, original engine/transmission.  You read that correctly -- sadly, just never quite made it to Ohio.

Great times checking the message board daily while I got my "sea legs"!!!  Now I just troubleshoot, but continue to rely on all the wonderful help I still find here.

Thanks again Steve...happy trails!
