Under Dinette Lighting February 06, 2025, 04:31:39 pm Finally got the last cabinet lighting installed. This is the cabinet area below the dinette seat. I have that seat permanently fixed so it does not pull out for a bed. There was no easy to get to 12v source inside so I used the electric stair as a source. That's it! All cabinets are lighted when opened. I thought about doing the exterior cabinets but I decided to leave them without lighting. jor

Here's my post on the sliding tray: trayI used the same setup for all of the cabinet lighting. LED strips and magnetic switches. Big improvement for little money! Re: Under Dinette Lighting Reply #3 – February 10, 2025, 01:11:06 pm All the new lights are nice, I love magnetic reed switches. The only problem I had in the past with adding lights to cabinets was if a door was accidentally is left open, battery power was needlessly used. With the LED strips, power consumption is so low that it is almost inconsequential. It is amazing how much lighting and its power consumption have changed over the last 20 years or so. Adding lights in the past when incandescent bulbs were the only choice added significant power consumption. Early experiments with LEDs were pathetic, the LEDs were too small and had short lifespans due to being overpowered. When the inexpensive LEDs on a roll became available, everything started changing. One of the old fluorescent fixtures LD used takes as much power as all the interior LED bulbs we now have added, together. Larry 1 Likes
Re: Under Dinette Lighting Reply #4 – February 10, 2025, 01:24:19 pm Another possible solution to cabinet lighting is one I saw in a 1999 Chinook. Incandescent "rope lights" (a string of tiny incandescent bulbs in vinyl tubing) were strung through all the overhead cabinets, one "rope" on each side of the rig. Each rope was controlled by a single switch in the center cabinet. When that switch was turned on, all the cabinets on that side were lit. This setup simplified wiring and installation, since there was only one switch and one set of lights on each side of the rig. Since the cabinets were not expected to be left open for more than a few seconds at a time, the power consumption was acceptable even with incandescent bulbs. LEDs, of course, would be far more economical. This arrangement didn't light lower cabinets or other places, but it was a clever, simple way to light the upper ones.
