There are several good posts that describe different procedures. I chose the drain and fill rather than the flush. Fun project; you'll enjoy it.jortrans fluid change 1 Likes
Re: Changing transmission fluid Reply #2 – March 06, 2024, 05:35:21 pm Miles and previous fluid changes?Lots of info in the archives if you search for 'Transmission Service'. For example, the thread jor points to, and this: Transmission flush vs drain and fillI've done the drain and refill, and the drain plug is easy to get to on the e450. Totally doable in the driveway. Pulling the plug at least once will let you clean the gunk off the magnet on the plug. For the last 5 years or so, I've been using a MityVac MV7201 and I can do everything from the topside. I put in as much as I remove 2-3 times, driving in between to mix the fluid. Changing the filter on the 4R100 requires dropping the pan. Ford doesn't think you need to change it. Many people do anyway. You can also change all of the fluid using the method LarryW describes in the thread linked above. There are plenty of opinions about which type of ATF to use as well in the archives. Popular choices include Mobil 1 ATF, Valvoline MaxLife and whatever Ford is now recommending as a replacement for the original Mercon.Rich 1 Likes
