Painting Cabinets February 22, 2023, 03:21:34 pm I don't see many posts on painting the interior. I'd like to cover that wood grained vinyl stuff that LD used. I am thinking about using hybrid alkyd enamel which is supposed to come close to an oil based finish. Anyhow, I am wondering about prep, namely sanding. I've noted that the vinyl is real fragile. Maybe a 3M pad instead? Or even liquid sandpaper? Anyhow, I'd love to get some advice from anyone that has painted their cabinetry. Thanks.jor
Re: Painting Cabinets Reply #1 – February 22, 2023, 04:28:45 pm For what it's worth, I repainted vinyl-covered kitchen cabinets in an apartment many years ago. I prepped with scouring powder and a sponge, rinsed thoroughly, and painted with alkyd enamel. It worked well, but I had to be a little careful--a fingernail scrape could lift the paint. Still, I lived there for almost twenty years, and apart from occasional minor touching up of scratches, it looked good enough that when I went to sell the place, the realtor commented "Oh, the kitchen is all new!"

Re: Painting Cabinets Reply #3 – February 25, 2023, 03:24:37 pm in 2020 We remodeled our bathroom and Kitchen/dining areas in our 98~MB. We painted the cabinets, removed the microwave for more storage and rebuilt a door for that cabinet front. We also built a small cabinet with door to replace the original LD pad on the side of the cabinet above the sink. We removed the carpeting for vinyl plank flooring, added tile to the wall in the kitchen and bathroom. Before Painting we researched different methods for preparing the paneling in our LD. First we removed all cabinet doors and hardware. We hard sanded the paneling in the bathroom where the vinyl was failing on the paneling and other places for a smooth surface. We then lightly sanded or steel wool scored the rest of the paneling throughout. We also used those Scotch Bright pads which worked well. When all of the surfaces of the cabinets and paneling was ready. We brushed all of the surfaces with a Sander Deglosser and Kills Adhesion Primer in places and on the cabinet doors. After 48 hours we lightly sanded all of the primed surfaces and brush painted the cabinets and other surfaces. We lightly sanded and added a final coat, it was covered well. We sprayed all of the cabinet doors with the same paint. Now after two to three years it is holding up well, there are a few nicks here and there. We have spent a lot of time traveling in our 98~MB maybe 40-50% of each year. One more question: I'm concerned about the big trim pieces. I'm wondering if the paint will adhere. I'm using a deglosser (liquid sandpaper), Behr alkyd paint like Andy used on the house and the bonding primer Behr recommends. Anyhow, do you have this type of trim? Thanksjor
Re: Painting Cabinets Reply #5 – February 25, 2023, 08:54:30 pm Jor, we were concerned also so we used the Scotch Bright pads first on those rounded corners, I don't remember if it was enough with the Scotch Bright pads, so if was not we would light sanded and painted with the deglosser and the Kills? Those corners turned out well and look good today. Those corners are also on the lower corners of the cabinets. Since we have a sprayer we sprayed the cabinet doors. You could brush them also if careful and light sand in between coats. Spraying inside the coach would require a lot of masking set up time and I think we got a good finish brushing with a lot less set up time. Karen~Liam 98 ~ MB NinA

We use it occasionally when we are connected to shore or use our generator or inverter almost never. But the mirror is a good size and when we were full time plugged in during Covid lock-down we used the light more.
