New Road Into Yellowstone November 02, 2022, 11:40:03 am On Sunday, a new highway built on the former stage line opened to the public. Known as the Old Gardiner Road, it previously consisted of a single lane with few guard rails and was used mainly by bicyclists and occasional four-wheel drive vehicles. The route, built with emergency federal funding, had to be widened and paved to highway specifications to accommodate the hundreds of thousands of visitors each summer who enter Yellowstone through its historic Roosevelt Arch, a stone landmark built in Gardiner, Mont., in 1903. Gardiner and other gateway communities in Park County (population 17,000) provide hotels, restaurants and other services for Yellowstone travelers. The new road is designed to allow up to 3,000 vehicles a day through the north entrance, helping to restore $236 million in estimated annual spending by visitors to Park County. The whole article.Yellowstone Gets a Lifeline After Flood With Revamped Historic Road - WSJ 3 Likes
Re: New Road Into Yellowstone Reply #1 – November 02, 2022, 09:20:36 pm Don, I found this video from a Gardiner local. We wanted to travel it today but didn't have time. It really is pretty scenic in my book better than the washed out road. This is Mammoth to Gardiner.Jonhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yHFDr5ZpweI 3 Likes
Re: New Road Into Yellowstone Reply #2 – November 02, 2022, 10:59:56 pm Interesting. The “New” road, being constructed on Old Gardner Road, avoids the flood risk of the Gardner river but crosses the path of another major geological hazard, an unstable slope prone to land slide (look above Slide Lake on a satellite map). Nature, especially in Yellowstone country, will have its way with all the pretty things we humans create. I expect that the new road should be good for our lifetime, however. 1 Likes
