Generator light
So I just noticed that my generator light is on. We’ve been plugged into shore power for a little over a week, so I have not been using the generator. I’m not sure how long it’s been on today, but I just noticed it. Why is it on? And what do I do about it?
Thanks

(Also, sorry if this is a repeat topic, I searched and couldn’t find an answer)

Is it on solidly, or does it blink? If it blinks, it is a code, and you will have to refer to the generator manual to decipher it. If solid, see what the manual says too.

It is solid- I’ve been looking online for the answer (the only manual I have is the LD manual -and a DVD for the generator) I see lots online about blinking, but nothing about a solid light.  Weird because I wasn’t even using the generator.

In case the button is 'stuck', try pressing and holding on 'OFF" for 10 seconds, After a moment you should hear a faint clicking sound of the fuel pump running. Then release the button to see if the light goes off.

Thanks, yea I tried that last night. This morning I started the generator, ran it for a few minutes, then turned it off. The light is still on.

I will try to call LD later, but was hoping to figure out sooner what the issue is (and if I need to get it looked at) as we are moving on tomorrow and we are gonna need the generator in the coming days.

Do you know what model your generator is, Rebecca? I have my manual and could look it up. Mine is QG 4000/3600 LP KY   P-R

Here is where you can download your specific manual. Troubleshooting codes should be listed.

If the Genny works as it's supposed to, but the switch doesn't work as advertised, maybe it's the switch. I say pull the switch panel and see if all the leads are connected as they should be. Maybe one is loose and making some sort of a short circuit

Another thing to check is at the generator - the switch there should mirror the one above the stove. If not, the problem may be directly behind the panel switch - shorting wire, etc.

Hi Rebecca,

A while back, I replaced the board in my control panel (inside the rig above the stove) due to an LED issue for my fresh water tank. The part is available from the manufacturer in Santa Ana. Todd has their number. It’s an easy replacement that requires no special tools or soldering.

The wires to the panel are very Lazy Daze style-short, very delicate and easily broken if you’re not careful. (Ask me how I know😵‍💫) A soldering iron on hand is advisable.

After replacing the board, my panels generator light would no light up but it still functions so I just let it go as it is. No issues.

It’s important to remember that the generator itself has a switch on it that can be used to start it from outside of the coach. This switch has a light that may “flash/blink” a fault code (this point has not been made clear in other comments so I wasn’t sure which “switch/light” you were looking at).

Anyway, if the actual generator start switch (on the generator itself) is not lit when the generator is not running, your issue may be related to the control panel inside the coach.

The part isn’t expensive and the manufacturer of the control panel may be able to advise you on its replacement.

Best of luck with this issue. Enjoy your travels and stay in touch.

I’m compelled to say that Kent’s suggestion is just terrific.   The results should help to pinpoint the source of this problem.   Kudos to Kent.

Hey Kent, I hope you are well…

So the best way to describe my situation is, the generator light is on….always. The generator starts, and works fine.
I called LD and Cummins, neither really knew what was going on, especially since they weren’t looking at my rig. They both agreed that it probably wouldn’t do any harm, since the generator runs and turns off fine. So the plan is for me to get it checked out by a Cummins specialist when I can. It might be some time as we are traveling, but I will plan ahead and see what I can get.

Thank you everyone for your help and suggestions. 😀

If all else fails, a piece of tape over the light might solve the issue.
Like most electrical problems, it's hard to troubleshoot when the rig isn't present.
