Phantom Campers August 29, 2021, 04:17:50 pm Interesting article on RV Travel. Didn’t realize this was a ‘thing.’https://www.rvtravel.com/phantom-campers-stealing-campsite-1013b/?popupally_stop=subscriber
Re: Phantom Campers Reply #1 – August 29, 2021, 05:02:25 pm Not the same but I've been spending the summer in Utah, mostly in the Dixie NF.What I see here is people coming up to the forest mid week, dumping their trailer in a nice spot and leave until the weekend comes to occupy the site. Then they come up with the whole family and raise hell with their little noise makers.Dixie NF requires you to spend the first night at the site before you can leave it, many don't. 1 Likes

Re: Phantom Campers Reply #3 – August 29, 2021, 08:42:28 pm It's definitely a "thing" . Some of the camper rental places also reserve places for their clients who may or may not show up. It can be very frustrating.
Re: Phantom Campers Reply #4 – August 30, 2021, 02:52:34 pm Phantom Campers are a are real thing, we and others have noticed the increasing numbers of empty sites in fully booked campgrounds. The sites are held at least overnight, in case the campers arrive late, common for us when we were still working. The sites are usually held until noon the day after before being released. There doesn't seem to be an easy fix unless the reservation agencys find some way of tracking reserve unoccuplied sites and penalize the buyer after repeated offences. I know the parks are aware of the problem after talking with rangers about this. Both Recreation.gov and ReserveCalifornia.com allow booking multiple resevations on the same day. With reservations so hard to get today, I have sometimes made multiple reservations on the same day when planning long trips, once the schedule is finalized, any extra sites are immediately canceled, I want my money back.Evidently, some folks have too much money and no conscience.Larry
Re: Phantom Campers Reply #5 – August 30, 2021, 03:50:26 pm The outcomes of the combination of “game-able” reservation sytems and clueless “It’s all about me” campers are frustrating and irritating, but not surprising. 2 Likes
Re: Phantom Campers Reply #6 – August 31, 2021, 10:25:55 am They need to go back to making no more than 50% of the campsites reservable. But I'll be surprised if that happens since they're currently getting paid whether or not anybody actually shows up and uses the site.Steve
