Rear speaker wires August 28, 2021, 03:31:06 pm Both right and left rear speakers are wired the same.I'd like to get the polarity correct for the new speakers.Does anyone know which color is the positive or ground?I think the orange is positive.
Re: Rear speaker wires Reply #1 – August 28, 2021, 03:43:34 pm Hi Ted; Neither wire is hot or ground. They are totally independent and 'floating. Only referenced to each other, and separate from the other speakers. That is the only way you can get so much power into a speaker with only 12V.dc to work with. What matters is that the cones are moving together in phase. All four push out, or pull in at the same time. In the old days a 1.5v battery could be hooked up to observe cone movement. I don't think I'd do that to quality speakers these days. They have crossover networks built in, with midrange and tweeter cones coaxially located in the same speaker framework. The connectors should have a + (plus) and a - (negative) mark on the terminals. Included paperwork should identify which is which, along with the manual for the radio. In the not so sophisticated old days you would just have two wires. Not copper/silver or ribbed/smooth coded. Out of phase speakers mostly affected low frequencies and resulted in 'mushy' lows.
