Fitting two eBikes inside closet! Pic included
Hi Everyone,

Just thought I'd share our newest acquisitions...2 tiny ebikes.  They're called Jetson Bolt Pro, and we bought them from Costco.  Two of them fit perfectly in the closet of our 26MB.

Yes,  we look rather silly riding tiny bikes, but hey...Now, we don't have to deal with the trouble of using a bike rack or worry about theft or think about rain.  On the other hand, we lose significant storage space.  For us, though, there's still enough room elsewhere for all of our stuff.

I think our two folding non e-bikes take up more space than that, and we just secured them on the floor of the rig while travelling. When camped, they both fit in the front passenger seat area of the cab, out of the way and easy to unload from outside. They can be covered to hide them from prying eyes.

That does bring attention to one of the shortcomings of e-bikes: they are bulky and heavy.  Even the top of the line bikes weigh much more than a similar pedal bike and that makes them difficult to maneuver for storage.

When in camp, we take ours off the rack so that we can use the Jeep on trails without the e-bikes.  I then chain them together with a 3/8 Pewag chain and chain the bikes to the frame of the Lazy Daze with a 12 foot section of 3/8 anchor chain.  I then cover them with a large motorcycle cover than makes them less visible and keeps them dry if it rains.

To protect the frames and paint of the bike frames, I pass the chains through two lengths of motorcycle inner tube.

This is all a bunch of bother and extra effort compared to my pedal bikes, but the Admiral will ride more frequently with the ebike when on trips, and that is a better outcome than carrying her pedal bike and have it used less.

We're able to store two Brompton folding bikes in the outside storage compartment just aft of the driver's seat in our Rear Bath. (We also get a tool box, two 1 gallon propane tanks and misc. other stuff in there.) Bromptons aren't cheap but this makes for a great solution, since when they are not in use (most days) they are completely out of the way, safe and secure.

Brompton now makes an electric version of the same bike, on which the battery pack is detachable, so that the e-bike is essentially the same size and not much heavier than the regular version. I believe it would fit in the same space as the standard version. We test rode the e-Brompton in San Diego not too long ago. It works well.

I think the high cost of a Brompton is mostly offset by its strong resale value. I suspect ours would sell today for about what we paid for them 18 years ago, or more.
