Charging batteries with the alternator April 15, 2021, 10:02:28 pm In my '95 I was under the assumption that the generator charges the house batteries faster than the engine's alternator.I was surprised to learn that with new Lazy Daze models the alternator is faster at charging them. Does anyone know what year that changed?
Re: Charging batteries with the alternator Reply #1 – April 15, 2021, 10:36:26 pm I suspect because the newer alternators are higher output models. 1 Likes
Re: Charging batteries with the alternator Reply #2 – April 15, 2021, 10:54:53 pm The 2022 E-450 Cutaway chassis comes standard with a 210-Amp Alternator. Optionally, you can have a 240-Amp Alternator or a Dual Alternator setup with a 240-Amp and a 157-Amp Alternator. I'd want the Dual Alternator Option. I think the alternator in our 2007 is a 135-Amp.E450 Cutaway DRW SpecsCharles 1 Likes

Re: Charging batteries with the alternator Reply #4 – April 16, 2021, 01:38:24 am The generator does not charge the batteries. The battery charger circuit in the converter charges the batteries when the generator is running - or connected to shorepower. Until recent models, the oem converters were weak at charging the batteries, but they are easily upgraded with any vintage of LD.Steve 1 Likes
Re: Charging batteries with the alternator Reply #5 – April 16, 2021, 09:20:18 am It has never changed. What has changed is the newer 3 stage converters have higer charging currents, say 30 to 60 amps that contribute to improved generator charging efficiency, less the generator 12 volt operating and excitation current. In my 1988 MB the chassis engine 100 amp alternator is capable of charging the house batteries faster through the 40amp house circuit than using the generator and 3 to 6 amp Magnatek 4536 converter charging circuit. My add on 300 watt solar can charge the batteries faster than the converter.A 100 amp alternator delivers 1200 watts. My chassis to house circuit will allow maximum of 500 watts to the house battery. My converter produces 540 watts(36 Amps), but only allows 75 watts to charge the battery, run the TV, and run the 3 way Refrigerator. 1 Likes
