Over cab bed December 18, 2020, 03:48:16 pm Is there a weight limit on over cab bed .and any suggestions for a replacement mattress?
Re: Over cab bed Reply #1 – December 18, 2020, 04:47:55 pm no weight limit given... two large people.. 500 lbs! It easiest to go with a piece of foam rather then a whole mattress. Do a search on this site and you'll get various ideas on foam thickness, type, density, etc. I went with 3 inches of latex, medium density from "Sleep on Latex". Memory foam is very popular. Re: Over cab bed Reply #3 – December 19, 2020, 01:24:59 am I've described elsewhere how I made a mattress in my Trillium trailer: five one-inch layers of foam, five different densities, softest on top and stiffest on bottom. It was the most comfortable mattress I've ever had.I recommend against buying a single slab of foam, regardless of type. I've been down that road more than once, and it was never as good as a multilayer, graded-density mattress. 4 Likes

Re: Over cab bed Reply #5 – December 19, 2020, 09:59:40 pm Eric,We did the same thing when we first got our LD- back in 2017. Found a foam mattress we wanted but didn't want to chop it up to fit especially since we knew our current LD was not long term, and emulated the layers (3, thicker firmer one at the bottom, 2 smaller layers with the to being a topper). We used Spray Adhesive, the foam store sold it but it is also sold at places like Home Depot (an example). If you want to be able to take it apart at some time, spray one side. For a hold that is much less likely to be taken apart (but can be), spray both sides thoroughly. When tacky, put the sides together. Our experience, once the layers are in place, the layers really don't move much no matter which way you attached it.Note, we put it inside a mattress cover, so the surface was much nicer (when sheets are being washed etc.), other wise it likely will start tearing in spots. We have used 2 zippered different covers now - changed it out this year when we changed the shape of the mattress, just to keep it fresh. We highly recommend the ones that feel like sheets vs the ones with a little more slickness (some nylon in them). Your sheets will stay on them much better. There was enough extra space, because our mattress was not 12" tall, that a normal king sized mattress fit even though our space was a little larger than a king (the TK beds made into a king) with room to spare.Jane 1 Likes
Re: Over cab bed Reply #6 – December 19, 2020, 11:56:35 pm A 3" memory Costco memory foam pad, over the hard Factory mattress, has been our approach to making the bunk comfortable, our traveling bed for the last 18 years. The memory pad has been replaced once, it hardens with age.Larry 1 Likes
Re: Over cab bed Reply #7 – December 20, 2020, 06:51:27 am We love the hard factory mattress. When they developed a depression from our over-weight midsections we had them stuffed with more hard foam.As always, different from the masses. 1 Likes
Re: Over cab bed Reply #8 – December 20, 2020, 07:35:51 am We always sleep in the cab-over bed that is said to be queen-size. I ordered a 4" double bed medium density memory foam mattress topper with a zippered cover from Overstock.com several years ago and it is still as comfortable as when we bought it. We chose the double bed size topper which left a little room around the edges to tuck in the bedding more easily. It is just laid on top of the original LD mattress and we leave the cab access down all the time. After a long journey we undo the bed and take the topper down for some airing.
Re: Over cab bed Reply #9 – December 20, 2020, 11:36:52 pm "Andy, how did you hold the layers together?"I didn't. :-) I wrapped a mattress cover around the five layers, and it held together just fine. (Because it was in one end of an RV, it was confined by walls on three sides, which I'm sure helped.) I'll add that I was easily able to cut the foam to shape using a cheap electric carving knife.
Re: Over cab bed Reply #10 – December 21, 2020, 09:51:26 am I found the factory mattress very comfortable.
Re: Over cab bed Reply #11 – December 21, 2020, 03:17:24 pm What a timely topic! I just this moment managed to wrestle my new 3” Medium density pad from Sleep on Latex into my new sleeping chamber. I am already convinced that I will do better with a three or four step step ladder than the vertical factory ladder. I need to figure out what will work best with the 52” clearance available under the bunk.
