Progressive Still the "Best Brand"? May 14, 2019, 05:48:10 pm My Progressive surge protector came with my "new to me" LD, but it's an 05, and I imagine this is the only surge protector it has ever known. Has reliably shown me an E0 code until two nights ago when I got a faulty ground code; then today, at a different park, I had intermittent brief power interruptions over night; then this afternoon the coach lost power completely and the EMS showed a high voltage error. I fooled around with it, even went so far as to open the box (breached whatever warranty there was, right there, I am sure -- and yes, of course, I should have just called Progressive-- next time I will be a good girl). ANYWAY, I called around to a couple of nearby RV places and interestingly, they said they don't carry Progressive anymore. I will be at my next location for at least 3 days, so could order a Progressive shipped to me IF YOU ALL AGREE this is still the only product to have for EMS. Or, I can stop at a CW (ugh) on my route and buy SOB if there IS another brand....so, this is the question. Should I buy only Progressive? or is there another manufacturer that is gaining ground on them? And if so, who is that? (p.s. I am not a price sensitive buyer, I prefer to buy once, even if I have to pay for the privilege.) Thanks to all. MJB

Reply #1 – May 14, 2019, 08:29:23 pm Marcia. So your EMS reported some electricity problems in the parks you were at and you think it is a faulty EMS not a problem at the parks?Progressive EMS is available at Amazon and I bet some online RV stores carry them - maybe you could get one overnighted to you.But before I replaced my EMS I would want to know it was the problem not the parks.Progressive tech support is very helpful and friendly and worth a call.JaneSent from Yahoo Mail for iPhone
Re: Progressive Still the "Best Brand"? Reply #2 – May 15, 2019, 01:57:32 am Marcia, when you opened the box, did you tighten the setscrews holding the AC wires in place? The only failures of Progressive EMS boxes that I know about occurred when those screws loosened and the terminals overheated as a result.
Re: Progressive Still the "Best Brand"? Reply #3 – May 15, 2019, 02:11:56 am Marcia, I guess we should also be asking if you have the permanently installed version or the plug in version (goes between your RV and the shower power outlet).Jane
Re: Progressive Still the "Best Brand"? Reply #4 – May 15, 2019, 05:23:27 am Thanks to all, yes, this is an exterior box. We isolated to the box (not the coach) & pole tested ok. Fuses all check out. And, yes, I tightened everything I could see when I put it back together, but now of course, I have broken waterseals at edges & screws. I will call Progressive tomorrow. When I came back this evening from dinner, I took a shot at it & plugged in. To my surprise, everything fired up just fine, but elec has cut out in the coach overnight 4 or 5 times; restoring on each occasion in just a few minutes. (I know this b/c of my cpap machine...) Would this be normal behavior in the event of high voltage surges? I get why this might be normal, but this afternoon I could not get power to the coach at all xc when bypassing the EMS.
Re: Progressive Still the "Best Brand"? Reply #5 – May 15, 2019, 01:39:50 pm If you watch the EMS's voltage display (I know, not convenient with an outside unit and not practical overnight), do you see it heading to excessive levels (over 125 V or so)? In general, I'd be inclined to believe what the EMS tells me and perhaps try a different campground.I don't know of any EMS better than Progressive's. (And the reason those RV dealers you talked to stopped selling it could be something as simple as Progressive cutting their dealer margins, so unless they said "Of the last ten we sold, four were defective," I wouldn't put too much credence in them.) Suggestion: get a 12 V adapter for your CPAP, if one is available. 4 Likes
