Replacing the swamp cooler
Has anyone successfully installed a roof widow  in place of the swamp cooler?
Is the opening the correct size?
Will the mothership do this or is it a relatively easy fix?

The opening should be 14" X 14", the standard roof vent size.
Do you want a skylight or ?  A clear crank-up vent would provide light and additional ventilation.
Since power should already be present, why not add another Fantastic Fan?

The Mothership do something non-standard?....wishful thinking.

I was considering just a blank window. No crank.
I have a fan-tastic right next to it and one in the bathroom I installed.

You could use one of these, glued and screwed to the roof, to cover the existing hole

I would prefer to use an inexpensive vent cover so the cover can be easily replaced, if damaged.
If a skylight, shown above, is cracked, the whole thing will need to be cut off the roof and replaced.

Plus with a ceiling vent you will get all the trim to clean up the opening. A guy can always use more ventilation.

Hi Ted, Larry. I've had bad luck with Icon products in the past. Too expensive at $56, this one is less expensive, about $38. Note the metal framework, very sun resistant. comes with that noisy fan (you don't need to use it).I bought one of these about a year+ ago, and was very happy with it. I cannibalized it for parts because I didn't want to replace the factory vent entirely. The 'garnish' the plastic part you see from inside needs to be bought separately, about $6.

No question the preferred method would be to use a conventional 14X14 vent.
For $20, it hard to go wrong with this complete kit.

I mentioned the Ikon cover as an alternative if the OP was set on using a skylight.

I previously saw a great clear see thru vent cover (have to buy the whole thing - inside trim and cover).  Great sunlight but around $250-300.   Made me think of it was worth it as opening our vent without a rain cover gives us a fair amount of sunlight.

One concern about a flat piece of glass - we had a steady strong rain for over a day and had nice size standing pools on the roof. A vent or the window larry showed a link to has a buildup of the frame that would help resist leaks more than just a flat piece of glass sitting in a puddle. It might be with it to confirm if you have any downward sloping at that opening where the weight of the swamp cooler was for years.
