Spring Rally in Virginia
The Northeast LD group will be hosting a rally at the Newport News City Park April 18-22, 2018 and we welcome any owner of a Lazy Daze.  We always hold an open house for wannabes on Saturday morning.  Details can be found on our yahoo group at Yahoo! Groups  Our hosts, the Pohlmans, have some interesting things planned for us and we'd love to have you join us.   If you have any questions, please post them on our yahoo site because I don't visit this site on a regular basis.

The trip to the Mariners Museum will be fun.  For those not part of the NELD, the museum has the salvaged artifacts from Civil War vessel "Monitor".
The campground was the site of a Civil War skirmish.
The salvage of warships is very controversial.  This salvage was properly done.  The salvage of this ship was carried out by the USN recovering its own.  Recovered remains of the sailors were treated the same as any other US service men.  The recovery of artifacts were then sent to a public institution.  There is a good book on the subject.   Amazon.com: Ironclad: The Epic Battle, Calamitous Loss and Historic Recovery...

Twelve (12) of the twenty-eight sites reserved for the rally have been booked.  April in the Piedmont of Virginia can be unbelievably beautiful.  All LD owners are welcome.  You do not need to be a member of the Northeast group to attend.

One of the things (many things) I enjoy about the NELD get togethers is the suggested book reading.  A member (withholding the names to protect the innocent) will suggest a book that is pertinent to the area we are camping.  I mentioned in a earlier post the book we read last time we were in the VA Tidewater area.   The book for this trip should be interesting as well.  It was the base for a PBS video some time ago.  From the information post on the NELD yahoo site:

"The book selection for the upcoming  rally is "Love & Hate in Jamestown: John Smith, Pocahontas, and the Start of a New Nation"  by David A.Price.
From Amazon:

A New York Times Notable Book and a San Jose Mercury News Top 20 Nonfiction Book of 2003In 1606, approximately 105 British colonists sailed to America, seeking gold and a trade route to the Pacific. Instead, they found disease, hunger, and hostile natives. Ill prepared for such hardship, the men responded with incompetence and infighting; only the leadership of Captain John Smith averted doom for the first permanent English settlement in the New World. The Jamestown colony is one of the great survival stories of American history, and this book brings it fully to life for the first time. Drawing on extensive original documents, David A. Price paints intimate portraits of the major figures from the formidable monarch Chief Powhatan, to the resourceful but unpopular leader John Smith, to the spirited Pocahontas, who twice saved Smith’s life. He also gives a rare balanced view of relations between the settlers and the natives and debunks popular myths about the colony. This is a superb work of history, reminding us of the horrors and heroism that marked the dawning of our nation.'..."
