Our New Lazy Daze - Rosie #2
Picked up Rosie #2 on Oct 6 and started the journey back to Michigan.  Because we didn't pay the California sales tax, had to have an ICC driver take us to the Arizona border.  FYI, do not assume that the ICC drivers have been informed about the engine "break in" period suggestions: no cruise control, don't go 70 mph, no hard braking.  Our driver did all of that.  I had to inform him.      A "deja vu" happened.  When we drove our first LD back to Michigan in 2002, a rock was kicked up by a passing car and hit our windshield.  Well, guess what happened again.  We were about an hour out and another rock was kicked up and hit the windshield right in the middle.

Glenn & Joan,

Rocks are not my friends either. Best for Desert Rats and gardens not LD windshields. Rather break my heart than my windshield. Sorry for your lose but your LD is still Bright & Shinny.

Safe travels from here on and congrats on your new Lazy Daze.

I’m jealous and happy for you at the same time!

I got on “the factory list” today after seeing so much junk at the Pomona RV show the last 2 weeks and I want to take my family camping!

PLEASE message me if any of you hear of a good LD RV 2009 or newer for sale looking for a 24' twin king/front dinette or possibly a 27' rear bath. I’m in California and will fly anywhere/anytime for a fairly priced unit!
I want to buy from an owner not a dealer, help each others family out!

Congratulations, Joan and Glenn!  May you have many wonderful adventures.

On our maiden voyage, this past June, in our new-to-us 2011 27' MB, we took a rock in the center of the windshield that left an impressive divot and three 2" spider legs.  (My son, who has some experience in such things, applied the RainX repair kit to it.)  I have never had a good relationship with I-5 up the Central Valley.  We are no longer on speaking terms.

Best of luck to you as you explore our beautiful world.

I-5 is so bad in places, our rig makes too much noise to talk.
Unfortunately,  sometimes it is the only way to go, unless you have plenty of extra time to go around  on 101 or  395.
The fact that out tires run at high pressures, with little give, and the suspension's limited travel both contribute to the noise and rough ride.
It's amazing that after dozens of trips up I-5, the coach itself is still quiet and tight, the noises come from our gear bouncing around.

So apparently a new feature of the 120v/12v Converter Panel in our new 2017 is when you're hooked up to shore power the fan runs constantly.  In our 2002, it only ran when a certain temperature was reached.  My wife found the noise extremely annoying.  I suggested that when she reached a certain annoyance temperature, that we unplug from shore power.  She gave me stink eye look.

Hi Glenn,
Yes, the converter fan runs nonstop when we're plugged in to shore power in our 2016, too. We travel with friends in a 2017 LD TK just like ours and they figured out how to turn it off inside the LD. I've been using their "trick." I have no idea if it's a good idea or not to do this, but the constant fan noise is super annoying. As far as I can tell you still have electricity when you do this because the clock light comes on on the microwave. We only turn the fan off when no major appliances are running - when they are, their noise drowns out the fan anyway. But, when they're not, the fan is way too loud.

What you do is open the door on the converter box down by the floor. It has a little latch that lets you pull it open by hand. Inside, from the left to the right, there are 4 switches. If you push the second switch from the left down, voila! the fan goes off. This is quicker and easier than going outside and unplugging the LD or turning off the power to the post.

Here's a photo I put in the Media area of the forum showing the switch.

The experts here will hopefully educate us whether this is a good or bad idea,

Best RV wishes,

Hmm... You describe turning off the second "switch" from the right, but the picture shows the second "switch" from the left is off.

If you meant the second "switch" from the left, that's the circuit breaker that supplies 120VAC power to the converter. By turning that off, you shut off the converter and prevent it from charging the house batteries. Do that long enough and the 12V appliances (lights, fans, refrigerator control board) will stop working.

Oops, sorry, yes, I mean the second switch from the left. I'll see if I can edit that and correct it. Thanks for explaining that turning off that switch shuts off the charging of the house batteries. That's good to know!!

Going forward, you could install a switch on the fan (somewhat risky if the fan is both needed and forgotten),
install a thermostat allowing it to cycle automatically, or do a deep dive into fan specs and source one that moves as much air, but runs much more quietly.  I've used each of these approaches on PC's, cars, or other equipment.

Your way both controls the heat source well and serves as a safeguard against forgetfulness.

Well, for once having an older rig is better than having a new one. That fan doesn’t run all that much on our 2004 and certainly only for a short time.

Dave, just winterized the rig today since the next few weekends are busy. 😒

But wouldn't the two solar panels help in charging the house batteries while that circuit breaker is turned off?  The sound of that fan on all the time is quite annoying.  I guess when it gets too annoying, we just unplug from electric.

LD's built in the last few years have a large, 75-amp converter.
Instead of it having a thermostaticly controlled fan, it has a cheaper, constantly on cooling fan.

Really, this is the best that LD can do? Almost everyone, with decent hearing, hates the continuous fan noise.
Other than switching to another brand of converter, many leave the converter off at night or when it isn't needed.
The converter's circuit breaker is usually number 2, from the left side, 120-VAC breaker and is labeled "Converter".

If solar is available, it may be all you need for charging most of the time, depending on your camping power consumption style and the time of the year (much less solar is available in the winter).

FYI- When our rig is parked at home,  the converter's power breaker is left off to prevent boiling off excessive amounts of battery water.
Our LD's solar is more than enough to keep the battery charged and to supply power to the few items that are aways on, including power to run the refrigerator's 12-volt control board.

Thanks Larry.  We purchased two solar panels.  We will take your suggestion about turning the breaker off and only turn it on if needed.  We'll find out if the solar panels will do their job in the Michigan winters.
