Surfboard/SUP Rack July 18, 2017, 09:12:02 am I am looking for suggestions on ways to add a vertical surfboard/SUP rack to the back of my Lazy Daze. I recently saw this on a newer model Mercedes Winnebago. After checking out the manufacturers website (Topline Mfg), it appears that it may be two ladder attached bike racks with a hitch mount carrier base. Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated. I am tired of wrangling longboards through the side door and I definitely cannot get the SUPs inside.
Re: Surfboard/SUP Rack Reply #1 – July 18, 2017, 12:07:19 pm Here is one I looked at recently The Original Vertical RV Kayak Racks - Made In The USA. RV KAYAK RACKLooks quality if well mounted. The problems I see with ladder mounted racks are- the angles of the LD ladder present problems for brackets that would keep the boards vertical; the amount of torque applied to the ladder continually, side to side, from the boards would tax the ladder mounting screws; anything that interferes with the view out our LD windows is forbidden. I rebuilt the rear end of our '92 MB, and the ladder is attached with 1" #10 screws into a backing plywood that is approximately 1/2" thick. Decent for the shearing up and down forces we exert climbing the ladder once in a while, but not robust enough for my taste when under continual back and forth motions as we travel for hours on bumpy roads with side winds. There is some good framing inside that rear end that would take a good sized screw or even a bolt through the wall, like the spare tire mount. The key is finding the framework. So I passed on the rear rack, but I tend to be conservative about carrying loads down the road that may separate and find their way into a flowing vehicle : ) 1 Likes
