Towing a Mustang March 25, 2017, 10:44:33 am Anyone towed a mustang on trailer behind a LD?My mustang is about 3500 lbs plus 1300 lb aluminum trailer. This exceeds LD 4000 lbs limit. Any recommendations on how I can tow mustang with LD? Any acceptable upgrade that can accomplish this safely? Thanks Ron

Any acceptable upgrade that can accomplish this safely? Thanks RonIf you're in SoCal, visit one of the Eckharts hitch & welding shops. They installed a frame-extension-mounted upgraded hitch on my TK (in conjunction with fabricating a scooter rack). They did very fine work. Allegedly, the new hitch will pull 10k pounds. That, of course, would exceed the capabilities of the Ford chassis, but it should be able to handle your intended load. -- Jon 1 Likes
Re: Towing a Mustang Reply #4 – March 25, 2017, 03:05:21 pm Curious as to if anyone out there in LD Land uses a tow dolly?
Re: Towing a Mustang Reply #5 – March 25, 2017, 03:30:49 pm A few here have used dollys and most stopped after a few trips .The exception are those who have multiple cars they wish to tow.Their biggest problem with them is where to park them, at home or in the campground, and the added weight of the dolly.Larry
Re: Towing a Mustang Reply #6 – March 25, 2017, 10:13:04 pm Thank you everyone for you input. If is very helpful. Dollies would require space to leave on road or home. The trailer I want would require even more space. Probably be a pain to haul a trailer. I can four down with my 2005 Malibu or get a Mini Cooper convertible four down, Jon,What is the capacity of the Ford chassis 450? Thanks everyone.Ron

Pre 2008 E450s have a 14,500-lbs GVW, at sea level. In 2008, it was upgraded to 14,500-lbs.New LDs, with the 6-speed transmission, have a GCWR of 22,000-lbs. Older E450s have a 20,000-lb GCWR.As the altitude increases, the weight ratings decrease.Larry
Re: Towing a Mustang Reply #8 – March 26, 2017, 08:57:56 am "Pre 2008 E450s have a 14,500-lbs GVW...."---14,050 GVWR; the increase in GVWR, from 11,500 for the E350, was main reason that some waited until the 2003 model year to get a 23.5'. The 26.5' rigs were built on the E450 previously, but 2003 was the first model year that the short rig was built on the E450 chassis. Lots of CCC in the little guys!
