Ten years of research on the road

Over the last ten years of Lazy Daze travel all across the continent my wife Elizabeth was doing research for a biography she has written about a 19th century woman doctor’s fascinating and extraordinarily adventurous life.

Dr. Mary Jane Safford’s uncanny ability to appear in the right places and times to experience and make true history was akin to Forrest Gump's similar but fictional talent. From the poverty of youth and through a series of adventures' leading to her becoming a European-trained, gynecologic surgeon, she rose to a fame larger than life.

As we RVers do today, she traveled many times all across America and Europe via carriage,  stagecoach, and railroad witnessing many historical events of that period.

The book, Mary Jane Safford, MD: INDOMITABLE MITE is now complete, published, and currently a best seller for medical history on Amazon.

I thought the Lazy Daze community might be interested in this woman’s life story. There is a synopsis on the Amazon page.

There are several Safford locations to visit if you are traveling about. The Safford House Museum in Tarpon Springs, FL is where she lived (and died) in the later years. The Safford Library and Cairo Custom House in Cairo, IL have artifacts of the period when Gen. Grant staged the troops there at the beginning of the Civil War. The Saffords were personal friends of Grant and Mary assisted the wounded of the first battles on the western front.  The story continues from there.

Elizabeth’s research and writing endeavor was mainly to bring Mary’s life back from historical obscurity. Hopefully the book will rectify this.
