The moment of truth
Fully loaded for our trip (no holds barred), we headed down to the catscale in Lakeville early this morning to weigh in. Was thrilled to come in at 13,060 (GVWR 14,050). That is a big relief. Made appropriate adjustments to tire pressure (F 55-60, R 70) standard Michelin RV tires. Thanks to Dave and Sandy of Lakeville who spotted us at Cracker Barrel and stopped by to introduce themselves.

After weighing in 1,000 lbs below max GVWR, my first thought was " what else can I bring?". >:(

Todd,

After I weighed out with RV Weigh. I was  under weight about a 1000 pounds on the front end and a bit more than 900 pounds on the rear.

I always maintain a check list on my phone to determine "all's aboard" and what I think I could use in the future.

Here is my checklist. It looks like a ton of stuff but it slides right into place.

Kent.. why Turn Off Refrig & Propane before traveling???

Re: The moment of truth

Jo,

It is recommended by the Fire Guy. The propane tanks fuel lines run the risk of rupture in the event of a collision. If this should occur YOU run the risk of loosening your rig or worse in the event the propane ignites.

I once asked Todd at LD if traveling with the fridge running was ok. He said it was fine to do so. However, when I became interested in obtaining a better fire suppression system (Halotron & Foam Extingiushers) I learned of the dangers as I mentioned above.

I seldom travel more than a few hours so I don't risk the fridge getting warm inside. Plus if you like cold beverages on the road a folding ice chest will fill in nicely to keep drinks cold.

RV fridges remain COLD for 6 to 8 hours if you leave them closed while traveling and don't open them for an hour or two before hitting the road.

On my last trip to Big Bear, the drive was a little more than 3 hours. Got there fired up the fridge and had a nice "frozen" bowl of ice cream right afterward.

I suppose it all depends on your risk aversion. I'm fine with taking the extra step to protect my LD and family. There are plenty of RV related fires and I really don't want to be another statistic.

What's the over used adage? "Better safe than sorry".

For what it's worth...

I have had my L.D. for twelve years and other RVs prior to that.

With the exception of having to defrost the freezer my fridge has never been off, including while taking on fresh fuel or propane!

YMMV!

I'm surprised that a propane dealer would refill the tank when the refrigerator was on! The propane supply place I use here (and every propane dealer that I've ever used) insists that any LPG appliances are OFF when filling. Personally, I would never chance a potential explosion or fire by gassing up or getting a fill with the refrigerator (or other) flame going, but, each person is willing to accept different levels of risk.

Whenever I get propane I simply turn the propane supply off at the tank. Now nothing with propane can be running.

I believe that's what Lazy Bones does. Therefore he never turns off the fridge/freezer.

I've never seen a guy working on the propane tank not try and turn the knob to ensure the propane is off before he fills the tank.

Yes, I get out of the rig and stand over their shoulder peering intently at them. Nobody handles my baby without supervision!!! ;)

Don't forget that sparking when propane appliances try to light- with or without gas supply.

I want to reinforce what Paul just said: turning off propane at the tank should always be done when filling, but it is not enough. Any appliance with spark ignition--your fridge, water heater or furnace--can start sparking without warning, and with stray propane drifting around during the filling process, that could lead to an explosion. Any propane vendor who knows his or her job will ask you before hooking up whether all appliances are off, but even if they don't, it's up to you to do it.

As others have stated, propane related fires and explosions in RV's can happen if not careful in your practices. And don't forget about the deadly killer, carbon monoxide! Here is an article with some examples and good safety tips:

Many states require that you to do what Andy said, plus having everyone outside.
It's interesting to me that more than a few will not drive with the refer running. I guess that's the other end of the extreme on safety.

A guy in AZ, told me their state law makes them potentially liable for any propane problems until you get home. I have not researched the law to see if that's true.

I marveled? at your packing list Kent. Many of those items we would not think of packing. Heck, we don't even own them. On the other side I will bet that we carry items that you and most of the world would not carry. How about a pressure cooker? Had a tasty pot roast last night with potatoes and carrots. How about a torque wrench? Only used it once. It lives on top of the spare tire with never used jumper cables. Not much else would fit in that space

We do unpack, food, spices, most clothing, most tools, electronics, our bag of batteries, that sort of stuff. 30 minutes max. The bedding comes for washing and goes right back in.

We find it easier to have duplicates than lists. Of course, our home pressure cooker is twice the size. Grin

Don,

Say what ? My torque wrench isn't on my list. Maybe I better get back to checkin' but I know it's there.

Most items remain checked off the list. Only a few come and go. Consumables mostly. One tool bag goes back to work with me. Bikes come and go too (easy pickins, ya know?) Spices stay on board.

I love the idea of a small pressure cooker, but seldom have power hook ups to run one. Unless of course it's a stove top unit (didn't think about that).

The old saying rings home with me-"Never leave home without it". Not that I carried all this stuff with me in my backpack days, but "the list" sure made things easier back then and today.

Oh well, gotta do the wash and put it back in the rig.

Happy campin'

G Plam,

Agreed. Propane tanks are inherently strong and durable. The question isnt wether or not the tank will explode. The question is what happens to the unimpeded propane from a ruptured "house line" in the event of an accident.

As Andy and others have said, the ignighter on our RV appliances can cause serious problems in the event of a propane leak.

It's a simple task, for me, to take the precautionary steps to safeguard not only myself but others around me. What are the odds something will go wrong if I don't take these simple steps? I will never know.

Hey, we aren't here to tell one another how to live or travel. We are here to provide information. That's it. Simple and pure.

Just sayin'

Safe travels.

Don,

Here is a link to an article that outlines RV laws across the country-State by State.

Interesting read, actually. The laws referred to in the outline are from 2010 so I'm not sure how current the information is.
