awning repair or replacement

Hi all -- the plastic end cap (that allows the awning to slide in/out of the attached portion) is chipped and needing repair.    When I begin to extend the awning with the crank, it will ''catch'' in one corner, while the other corner starts to extend -- using the crank or stick, I nudge the stuck corner and it releases.

Anyway, Im wondering if a new awning is worth the cost and if it's an ''upgrade.''    And I'm wondering if there is a better awning available?

In high wind conditions, I've been stuck holding the awning thinking it was about to rip off the chassis, before getting it in with great difficulty.    In these conditions, retraction is a 2 person job -- and I've considered myself lucky getting the awning in.

My awning is an A&E I think, an '02 MB.

Anyone?

If the awning on your 2002 is the original, it's a Fiamma F45 that was badged as an A&E; you may find that this link provides a lot of information on the Fiamma awning.

IMO, yes, there are better awning choices (than the one you and I have); *vintage* Fiammas are flimsy, weak-armed, flappy, hard to roll in and out without rucking up and/or getting wonky, and the plastic parts are very prone to UV damage. (Just hope that the winding ring doesn't shatter.)

One possible replacement choice is the new(er) Fiamma; it appears to be a sturdier, better-engineered product than the early models. I don't think the "holes" line up exactly between old and new, and it's not cheap, but you might want to call the factory and find out if it's worth the outlay. And, maybe owners of LDs with later-generation Fiammas will share their experiences. Also Check Fiamma's website, http://fiammausa.com/ , for parts lists and other information.

This is good news about the new Fiamma awnings which I probably spelled wrong. I had an unfortunate incident with an obstruction and broke my awning. Vince called me Friday to say my new replacement had showed up. The insurance company didn't like this and raised my rates. First claim ever in over 20 years. I switched companies and the mothership already had the check. Ha Ha. I will be very happy when the repair is done. The replacement must be involved as they need to keep it overnight. So I need to find a decent motel close by.
I made some of these and they are wonderful if you have a sweet tooth: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/ina-garten/coconut-macaroons-recipe3.html
