Planning Trip From CA. to Florida

We are looking forward to traveling from Northern CA. to Florida, going along the Gulf Coast and spending a 6 - 8 weeks traveling from Jacksonville Fl. south to the Keys and then back up to Ft. Myers- Sarasota-Tampa-Orlando and then to Savannah as our last stop city.
We have never traveled this route before, or to Florida and were thinking of leaving late January? to late February? what do you recommend? Is there any RV Parks, Cities, or Places or Routes that are also recommend? We have only traveled to southern CA. and Arizona in the Winter months. We have a 30 ft 2006 LD and will not be pulling a car.

We spent 6 months January to July 2014 traveling through the southwest, Gulf Coast, down west coast of Florida, to Key West, up east coast of Florida, up several eastern states, a month in Washinfton DC, back home through middle of the country. We were along the Gulf coast in Feb. and in Florida in March.  We stayed in a wide range of spots from boondocking to high end RV parks.  We did have a tow car for exploring.

Sandra,A couple times a year I make the trip to the Melbourne area of central FL.  I am visiting family while there so if I am going to be there a long time I will rent a car.  But mostly I found I could get around fairly easily in my 26.5 foot MidBath.  Finding campsites this time of year can be a trial because of the Snow Bird migration - that is what the locals call northerners like me who drive south during the winter and occupy the beachside camping sites.  Luckily Fl has very nice interior parks and camps and though harder to track down local city or county campgrounds can be/are very special. Three east coast camps that I have stayed at and liked:Jacksonville (north FL): Nice wooded campsite, near the beach and in the City of Jacksonville (which you mentioned visiting).  Camping at Hanna Park                             Camping at Hanna Park   Get the latest information from the City of Jacksonville, Florida Web site              View on www.coj.net          Preview by Yahoo              Coco Beach Fl:  Best place to watch a rocket launch, a good place to park if you want to go on a ocean cruse  and close to the beach and also a good fishing area. Florida has a very good network of State Parks.  Recommend that you plan a stop at Paynes Praire State Park, a unique place. Also recommend you consider taking the high speed ferry to the Dry Tortugas from Key West.. it is a very enjoyable day trip. Caution that you need to have a plan and reservations for Key West. State Parks stay full in the winter and the commercial RV parks , although there are some nice ones, I found them to be outrageously expensive last January when we were there.  If you are retired Military the Naval Station has a good campground - if not recommend that you look at the  state parks in the keys now and make reservations if any available.

Hi, Sandra,
We have been spending most winters in Florida and along the Gulf Coast for a dozen years. We also travel without a toad and have had a great time. Rather than bore everyone on the Group here, I'll refer you to my website which has chronicles of our travels with lots of pictures and campground reviews of all the places we have stayed. Under the "Our Travels" menu option, click on the "Wintering in Florida" option.
Florida has a some great state parks, but reservations well in advance are needed for winter months. Since we like to be more flexible in our travels, we have learned to seek out city and county facilities. That led the development of a free website you can use to find them: www.ultimatecampgrounds.com.

Have a great trip!
