Electrical Outlet Tester

Last week I was reviewing some older posts and came across a discussion about the importance of using an electrical outlet tester before plugging into shore power.  Made great sense, especially after reading some of the consequences of plugging into an improperly wired outlet.  So I bought a Outlet Tester, connected it to an adapter we have, and we headed off to an East Texas State Park (Lake Bob Sandlin State Park).  We found a lovely heavily wooded site without any neighbors.  DW took the newly purchased outlet test and discovered that our lovely heavily wooded site had the hot & ground reversed.  I'm not sure what the consequences might have been if we had plugged into it?  Nevertheless, we were mighty pleased with our new tester.

P.S.  We called the State Park HQ and they immediately sent someone to re-wire the outlet.  He was very kind and grateful that we found this problem.  He said that plug was improperly wired for a very long time.  And so it goes.

Just don't try to use your electrical tester on an A.C. outlet powered by an inverter. I found that mine works fine on commercial A.C. outlets but goes haywire when I plug into inverter. Maybe the frequency is different. Voltage tests are within limits. Yet my cheap computer runs fine on it.
Go figure.

Glad that the tester indicated the fault and may well have saved your wiring; good move to use it! So many people just trust that a pedestal is wired correctly - if they think about it at all - and hook up.

You might want to consider an EMS, either hardwired or portable. The EMS tests for wiring faults before you hook up (fault code readouts) and "manages" the power coming into the rig. (The hardwired unit also protects the rig's wiring against "dirty" generator power.)

Hello Joan.  As you might remember, your LD Amiga (Martha from NM) installed one the progressive devices in BluCon.  (Martha said that a good many of her upgrades were based on your advice.)  At any rate, it must be a somewhat older model since it is mounted under the sink (above the water pump) and doesn't seem to have any kind of visible readout or feedback feature.  I suppose I should take some time and carefully read about that model.  (Back on my stomach, with a flashlight looking like a broken worm).  Take care.
