Easier way to replace a dump valve - Part 2

Greetings All

Well my work schedule and the weather finally conspired to deprive me of any further excuses to procrastinate on this little project. And this project is not for the faint of heart...

First bit of advice - you really don't need the whole assembly as the two "ends" are hardwired into the pipes coming out of the tanks. I was fooled by what looked like a rubber connector with screw clamps on the black water side. So unless you want to cut pipes, just go for the valves.

Taking out both valves at once did make it much easier to disassemble things. but not much easier to replace them and keep the seals in place - I'm still working on this one on the black side.

As an aside, "emptying" the tanks doesn't mean the system is dry - when you pull the valves out there's just a little bit more liquid to come out.

In the end I did have to cut the pipe to the gray tank. Rubber connectors to the rescue, and apart from one leak that I think I've figured out, that side seems to be working fine. I'm hoping that I won't have to cut the black side, but I have a rubber connector for that too.

Another problem is getting the last bolts out of the valve housings - the ones at the back and on the bottom on The Pearl. Fortunately I have my Dad's set of wrenches, sockets and various linkages, so I was able to wrestle them into submission.

There's more fine tuning to do so I can't call this project done - yet. However, I have made the requisite 3 trips to the hardware store for a plumbing project, so I''m hoping I only have a few finishing touches tomorrow.

Bottom line so far - if you can find someone else to do it for a reasonable amount of money, do! It's not an easy or pleasant job. I hope that newer models are easier to work on.

Pat, thanks very much for following up with us on the outcome of your project. Folks sometimes forget to do that and we are left with questions - if we remember what the project was.

Yes, thanks, for posting the outcome of the gate valve replacement; that didn't sound like fun at all!

I agree with Chris that when the OP doesn't post the results of a project or repair; an opportunity to add to the knowledge base is missed when we don't hear "the rest of the story"!
