Once my 1998 rig hit 80,000 plus, I switched from Mobile One to Mobile one Extended, used for rigs over 78,000 miles. I did have a little more useage w/the Mobile One till I switched to the Extended..now, no longer adding oil every 1,000 miles like before. In fact, haven't had to add oil after nearly 2,000 miles.

Which oil were you using before making the initial change to Mobil 1? Was the reason for the switch to Mobil 1 that the rig was using oil or did you choose to make the changes due to the mileage?

I'm curious because my 2003 has 93k, has always used Motorcraft 5W-20 "syn-blend", and uses only a few ounces between 3000-mile oil changes. I haven't seen any reason to switch to the much more expensive Mobil 1 (or any all-synthetic) because of the oil change interval I stick to. ???

We recently bought a 2007 LD RB and it received an oil change by dealer. Rig has about 32k miles on it.

I've had great success with Mobil1 over the years and intend on converting at next oil change. It's a superior lubricant and usually provides a slight increase in mpg. It's a bit spendy and oil filter has to be top notch but well worth it.

I am using Mobil 1 in my 2003RB and 2005 Forester, bought as a package set up to tow.  I think the previous owner used Mobil 1 for some or all of the time they owned it (since new).  The LazyDaze has almost 80K miles and uses some oil at least some of the time.  I don't think the Subaru goes through any oil, also about 80K miles on it.

I started using Mobil 1 almost ten years ago.  When  I started using Mobil 1 in my 98 Subaru wagon it must of leaked (you can read online about this when you switch to synthetic) onto the exhaust system and I could smell burning oil at stop lights.  I put the high milage Mobil 1 oil in on the next change and never had that problem again, even using the regular Mobil 1 mostly after that.

It seams like cheep insurance to pay $20 more for an oil change, just in case you actually drive the vehicly a quarter million mileas.  It probably never did me any good, sold the last couple vehicles with around 150K miles and they likely would have done that on any oil I suppose.

I had my LD transmission service done in June with Mobil 1.  Added something like $150 to the cost over regular transmission fluid.  Supossed to run cooler and tolerate heat a bit better.  And perhaps go longer between services.

"...usually provides a slight increase in mpg..."  Can you, or perhaps some of the other wizards, educate about the increase in mpg--I'm sure there's physics & other things involved.  I'm not enough of a mathematician to figure the cost-benefit of the higher price of Mobil 1 to the increased mpg...but I love reading the discussions.

I drive 55 & LDy Lulubelle was averaging a little over 10.5, even with the long uphill pulls in western KS/eastern CO (of course that dropped going back & forth over the Divide during the recent Ladeze GTG at Moab).    Thx!

The only mpg increase that would come from oil is reduced friction. Mobil one is good oil but the increase in mpg wouldn't justify the cost IMO. Other things could such as extended engine life, lower temperatures on critical engine parts, extended oil change intervals, in some cases quieter engine operation.

I think a quality engine oil that meets or exceeds a manufacturers engine requirements fits the bill. I use Castrol which is cost effective and tests have proved a good oil. My old BSA has run fine on it for 48 years. Engine never apart with exception of head gasket replacement.

MPG is a very complex topic.  Few people I know understand all the variables that go into this calculation.  Generally we take the miles we have driven then divide by the gallons we have used.  This gets us to a good guess but it's not scientific enough to use for anything but a good guess.  I will upload a image I took at a Costco gas pump.  As you can see they only sell you gas by the gallon with no regard to the energy content.  What this means is a gallon of gas even at the same gas station has different energy burn rate depending all at least three or four factors.  We buy gas by volume but burn it by weight.  Soooooo what I'm trying to say is you can't just change one variable ie oil type then measure MPG.  BTW I use Mobil One no because of gas mileage claims because I feel it helps my engine run cooler.

I can't speak to an improvement in MILEAGE using Mobil 1 over Ford Motorcraft (or another syn-blend); IMO, one would have to run one's motorhome under virtually identical conditions of road type, terrain, load, weather, and whatnot through at least one oil change interval to get figures for accurate, real world mileage comparisons.

Comparing costs of each oil is much easier; I used Walmart's prices for Motorcraft Syn-blend 5W-20 and Mobil 1 Full Synthetic 5W-20 (not the "extended use" version). Walmart's price per quart of Motorcraft is $4.37; Mobil 1 is $7.92. The price for the 5-quart jug of Motorcraft is $17.95; the 5-quart jug of Mobil 1 is $24.97. For a 6 quart oil change (assuming that one buys the 5-quart jug and a 1 quart container for the best value), the oil cost is $22.32 for Motorcraft, and $32.89 for Mobil 1.

If one runs Mobil 1 for a 6000 mile change interval, the oil cost is $11.75 less than running 2 changes of Motorcraft for 2 oil change intervals, i.e., an oil change every 3000 miles. How dirty and "broken down" the Mobil 1 is at 6000 miles (for example), I have no idea; the oil's condition would obviously depend on several factors. An oil analysis would show the overall condition.

The Ford manual recommends an oil change interval of 5000 miles using Motorcraft dino-blend 5W-20; the oil in my rig's engine doesn't get a chance to break down because it and the filter are changed every 3000 miles. I could certainly run for a longer interval without harming the engine; although I do a significant amount of mountain driving, I don't tow and the rig runs at less than 12000 lbs., but I maintain the "old school" belief that changing the oil and filter is likely the cheapest "insurance" one can get to help ensure engine longevity. Overkill? Perhaps, but it works for me.

I've never "stressed" over mileage; obviously, if the mileage was far enough out of the norm to indicate a problem, that would be a concern, but this has never been the case. It's a big engine; it sucks gas faster than a frat boy can bong beer. No matter how one approaches this lifestyle, it's not cheap! I just give the "covered wagon" whatever it needs to go down the road. So far, so good.

 I've not converted to a full synthetic on my LD yet but my experience with Mobil 1 over the years has been very favorable. Every time I've converted to Mobil 1, I've gotten a slight increase in my mpg.
 Last vehicle I switched to Mobil 1 was my GMC Sierra truck. I ended up with a 1 1/2 mpg difference. Not saying it will do that for yr rig or mine but I like the results I've had over the years and will make the change next oil change. Main reason I change is for superior lubrication not mpg.
