This is something that might be useful for some: http://www.amazon.com/Classic-Brands-Memory-Mattress-Replacement/dp/B005SF6QS2/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1435020919&sr=8-7&keywords=rv+memory+foam+mattress

I have problems sleeping because of back injuries. This makes me forget all about them. Worth every penny IMO.

I bought one like this - a 2" foam topper - for my husband who has the same problem.  He hasn't had a chance to use it yet but I tried it out one night and it definitely helps.  I didn't try it again since I've been crossing the desert and just the thought of sleeping on foam makes me perspire.

The twin size fits perfectly on top of the pulled out couch in the back of my MB.  Storage is a bit of a problem though.  For now, I have it rolled up against the front of the overcab area.  This works for now, since we're not sleeping in that space, but not sure what I'm going to do with it when we need to use the upper area for sleeping.

We sleep in the cabover.  Here's what we did with our topper:
We bought a 1 1/2 in memory foam topper.  I cut it lengthwise so that it matched where the bed of the cabover folds.  It won't lie flat, like it does without the topper, but it's much better than if it was just folded.  When we unfold the bed I just line up the edges of the two pieces of the topper.  They stay put perfectly.  You wouldn't know that it was in two pieces.
(Since I had extra pieces left over, I cut them into small pieces and use them as spacers in the refrigerator.  I put them between soda or other glass bottles so they won't bang into each other when we drive.)
As far as storage for your couch topper, I don't have any other good suggestion.  Those suckers do take up some space

I've bought three memory foam toppers from Sleep Warehouse over the past few years; the company offers a high-quality product, fair prices, good customer service (they will cut a topper to the size requested at no extra charge), and free shipping. If you've ever hefted one of the thicker memory foam mattresses up into the overcab, you know that "free shipping" is a real perk!

http://www.sleepwarehouse.com/sensus-memory-foam-mattress-topper/
The oldest topper (10 years+) was a 2" thick twin; it has now been made into a dog bed and replaced by a 3" topper, cut to fit a rear couch in the TK. The other 3" topper is in the overcab.

As ever, YMMV.

We have a substantial extra mattress in the overcab bed in our RB and just leave the bed down all the time.  This has never caused us any great grief.  Do you have a specific reason that the bed must be folded up when not being slept in?

FWIW I also don't fold up the overcab bed.  I leave the 3 inch topper in place at all times-heck anytime is a good time for a nappy..perhaps a little lunch break.
One thing for sure the foam topper really improves comfort for the bed.

"...the foam topper really improves comfort for the bed." ---- It does, but it also reduces the "clearance" in the overcab. Overcab sleepers usually get used to this constraint after whacking their heads on the vent crank handle a couple of times. ;-)

The most efficacious method for me is to do the requisite whack on the first night out.  Sometimes the experience penetrates for several days/nights before a repeat whack is required.  I tried hanging a bit of bright yarn from the vent crank handle to remind me.  That works . . . sometimes.

I can relate, and no it didn't knock any sense in to me. One of the reasons I sleep in the rear bed now. The overhead compartment if not used for sleeping is a great storage area for soft things like sleeping bags, foam topper, down comforter, laundry hamper, etc.

LOL,

Yea, I tried to sleep in the overhead area:
Lots of roll around room ... but I'm claustrophobic (sp?) ... and      I have to climb down to visit the bathroom tooooooo many times at      night .... and the ladder hurts my little feetsies when I climb up      and down (even though the steps are padded) ... and the transition      from horizontal (sleeping) to vertical (climbing up/down) is ....      umm ... challenging for a guy my size .... so I gave up on it.      But, as you say, great for storage of light weight things.
I have to say though, for those who can do it, it looks like a      great place to sleep. When we took our granddaughter on trips,      she disappeared in there, closed the curtains and slept/read/etc.      and was perfectly happy to have her own Man- .... er ....      Girl-Cave.

Save your poor head from injury by replacing the vicious crank with a gentle round knob.
Sure, you can still bump it, but it is a lot easier on the scalp.

Replace this https://www.etrailer.com/Accessories-and-Parts/Ventline/BVD0421-15.html

With this https://www.etrailer.com/Accessories-and-Parts/Ventline/BVD0421-15.html Your head will appreciate it.

Those knobs solve the problem of being poked in your back or in your skull by a crank, but they have an annoying flaw: while the knob's top is nicely rounded, the underside edges are painfully sharp, almost to the point where they could cut your hand. It took me almost ten minutes with a Dremel sanding drum to smooth off the worst of the rough edges on mine.

Amen to claustrophobic, George...& to the night trips  :-(  I didn't know I was claustrophobic 'til a college trip with my family in a SOB.  The parental units made out the dinette & sofa each night.  My sister (also college-age, but smaller than I was back then) refused to sleep in the back of the cabover...I remembered my lesson when I went hunting: I knew an overcab bed would only be for storage or stashing kidlets.  As it turned out, LDy Lulubelle doesn't even have the overcab bed, & I've never come close to using all the storage in the entertainment center, & any kidlets along can double up on the other TB in back (they're sisters & still pretty little) or sleeping bags on the floor...& my bed is always ready for a nap.

I have some degree of claustrophobia, had to be pulled out of MRI chamber briefly but was able to go back in.  Early on, I had one or two little issues with sleeping in the overhead-but they passed quickly and haven't had any since.  I think the fact one side is open to the interior helps.  The other thing it is dark and pretty well can't see anything anyway.  Funny with me both claustrophobia and fear of heights has increased in my older years.  In my 20s pretty much fearless...

Being a semi-quick study and balding with zero hair impact protection, it only took one good whack to understand that crank was not my friend. Didn't take long to make a low profile plastic knob, problem solved - there's times having a small machine shop helps, it does help counter Maslow's Law - "I suppose it is tempting, if the only tool you have is a hammer, to treat everything as if it were a nail."

Not sure if anyone sells a replacement knob to get rid of the crank (like Fantastic uses on their fan, though not sure if that one would fit).

I thought Maslow's Law was the Law of the Land!  ;->

What about one of the little bowl covers (in a bright color) filled with a soft substance and slipped over the crank, or over a knob, if you find that even a knob is too aggressive against unprotected scalps.  There are all manner of "One Wrap" Velcro helpers - both in ready-made, lightweight straps and the heavier stuff that comes on rolls - to deal with various needs around a rig.  The small pony tail rubber bands can be helpful, too.

I keep bed over cab folded back to give me an upper handheld to swivel & pull myself up out of the driver's seat. Not sure if my problem is that I'm too long-legged or too wide.

Anyone found any mattress topper fitted sheets? I realize many folk don't use them but I love my sheets and different weight blankets as needed. Been looking for mattress topper sleeves or fitted sheets. Currently I safety pin the full size fitted sheet to the back of the mattress cover back.
