Finding Tires for 1987 22' Lazy Daze on Chevy chassis
Yahoo Message Number: 153402
Hello, We recently purchased a beautiful 1987 Lazy Daze in NC and we cannot find tires. They require a 800/16.5r and they are impossible to locate. Any suggestions/help/advice is greatly appreciated. We want to hit the road, safely!!!

The problem is they have to be radials and not light truck. We found some Firestone that should fit but the mechanic says they are too big for the back tires. I was hoping someone might have done something different because we plan to go as often as we can, so we  will need tires fairly regularly.

Have you tried calling Tire Rack? They can get most anything. My friend gets old style wide whitewalls there for his Cadillacs. It's worth a try.

Check the owner's manual to verify the tire size.
Every G30 I have looked at was equipped with 8.75 R 16.5" tires.
Use only what the manual shows, duals are sensitive to size changes.

There are several make still available. Powercraft is what Ii had on my last one mid 80's RV that I sold this spring.. You can also change the rims and go with newer tires. If you change the rims do all 6.... Southwest Wheel made replacements for about 100 each. There are some from later models available but I can't remember which. When I was looking Tire Rack did not have any that fit. It is a common issue as there are a lot of the vehicles still in use. Solutions are available..but finding a tire person that understands the issue is not always easy.

What you need are 8.75R16.5 tires. The originals were bias-ply. Alternatively, you can get a set of 16" rims from a later model G3500 or equivalent, and get tires for those of equivalent circumference, e.g. 225/75R16. A junkyard would be the best source for wheels, or e.g.:

--- There are? In 8.75 x 16.5? I found only the Firestone in that size. Other brands?

Firestone is the only manufacturer of 16.5 tires. 8.75's is what you need, as already mentioned. Very difficult to get. America's Tire might be able to hunt some down, if you deal with someone that "knows their stuff" there.

Thanks. I really think it  would save me time, trouble, and ultimately, money, to switch the rims to 16". I don't want to go through this every 10,000 miles! Has anyone done the switch? All suggestions welcome. Thanks to all!

We bought tires for our '89 TK from Jack Furrier in Sierra Vista. We checked three places in town and they all said they could get that size. There were two manufacturers, Firestone and ??? ( CRS). I was told that Firestone is about to discontinue the size. The price was very negotiable and by quoting competitor's prices they took $300. off the cost. I would be very careful about checking dates on the tires if they really are discontinuing the size. The new tires are replacing old Firestones that served us well  for much longer than a sane person would drive on them! I'll admit to seven years.

If it were mine I wouldn't mess around with 16.5 tires but would switch to 16" wheels and tires immediately.  The cost savings on tires can pay for the wheels.  Don't forget you will need 7 (spare)

I think you made a wise decision..

Did you buy new rims or used and if new what rims did you buy? I was facing this but ended up selling my 84 Transvan this spring.

At the time I was looking at Southwest wheel company as a source for rims.

We got the rims from a salvage yard. Drives like a different vehicle. Glad we bit the bullet and just switched them out.
