Backup camera bargains at Woot

For what it's worth, Woot is running a sale on backup cameras for the next three or four days. I know nothing about these particular models, so I can't say how good they are, but I see some pretty substantial price cuts (e.g., a wireless camera with 7" display marked down from $205 to $60). In fact, they have some camera/monitor kits for as little as thirty five bucks. If you've been thinking about adding a backup camera to your RV, car or truck, this might be an opportune time.

Like Andy, I know nothing about the quality of the individual cameras.
However, a note of warning:  to be useful, a back up camera MUST have a large-enough, bright, clear display that can be adjusted for brightness/contrast and sound level.

The swamp cooler on our '91 LD looks like it has many issues and I am thinking about pulling it out and replacing it with a vent. Before doing that I thought I would check with the collective and see how many people actually use their swamp cooler. We have AC and a generator so I am thinking we probably can do without the swamp cooler. For those that replaced the cooler with a vent, what vent did you use and were there any issues with it?

TIA, Jay

Jay,

We recently pulled our swap cooler also.  It was functioning fine, but I never liked the idea of a water line up through my walls and roof, especially a 1/4" plastic line. We have a 23.5 TK, and the swamp cooler was in the rear, and forward of that over the galley was a Fan-Tastic fan. I removed them both and installed a new Fan-Tastic fan in the old swamp cooler hole, and installed a skylight over the galley where the old fan was. The difference with the skylight is unbelievable!  Really brightens up the interior! And now we have the option of blowing a nice cool breeze down on us while sleeping. The Admiral gives it two thumbs up!

If you camp in areas with very low humidity, the swamp cooler provide some cooling, using only battery power and water.
Many owners give up on them either because they are ineffective for their climate or the cooler is worn or broken and does not work. Parts are not widely available for some of them The common replacement is a Fantastic or Maxxair fan. The cutout in the ceiling is the right size and the 12-volt electrical power is already there, so installation is relatively easy Make sure to find the shutoff for the cooler's water supply and cap it off.

Most find the new ceiling fan to be more useful than the old evaporative cooler.

We took our Swamp Cooler out and replaced it with a fantastic fan.  Now we have three Fantastic Fans in the rig and rarely use air conditioning as a result.  We used Camping World to make the switch. No problems and everything is working well after three years or so.

I installed a new TurboKool in our '05 MB about 3 years ago, replacing the rear Fantastic fan (rearmost vent opening over the rear lounge/bed. I reduced the size of the escape hatch over the bunk and installed the removed Fantastic fan in that opening. Since the TurboKool requires fresh dry air intake to cool, using the forward Fantastic fan to exhaust pulls the cooled air the length of the interior. I live and mostly boondock camp in dry climates, so the TurboKool is very worthwhile. Nice to stay comfortable and not have to run the generator through the mid-day heat. Our 400 watts of solar power the swamp cooler with lots of power to spare to charge the two battery banks.

Bumper, Since I dry camp in the NV. desert quite a bit this Turbokool unit intrigues me. Pricing seems to be all over the place. Can I ask how much the unit cost you? Is it possible to mount it in the Escape hatch without compromising the ability to open it? Or is it a fixed mount like the Fantastic Fan?

Thank you,

Thanks to all for thoughts on the swamp coolers. Since we are not planning on any desert camping, I will probably remove the pla-cool that is on there and replace it with a fan.

Larry, Our water line has a shut off valve under the sink but it looks like it has been leaking. Is there optimum place to cut the 1/2" feed line between the valve and pump to allow for a clean and reliable way to cap off the line? The line looks like it is put together with a factory crimps and so I am not sure of the best way to cap it. I have a lathe and can turn a piece of aluminum down to fit and then use a hose clamp, but is there a better way to do this? The last thing I want is a hidden leak.

Bob,

The TurboKool is a fixed mount unit that mounts in a RV standard 16" square vent opening. On the roof, it requires additional room just like an air conditioner would (though not as much - the dimensions and specs are on the TurboKook website).

It could be mounted where the escape hatch goes, but keep in mind that it needs both 12 volt power and a 1/4" water line run to it. In the Mid-Bath, the escape hatch can get 12 volt power from the bunk light that is located to the right of it on the ceiling. I used a long drill to drill a 1/4" hole through the frame of the opening and then through the single additional frame member and then fished the wire through (however, I'm experience in fishing wires and have lots of long drills, owning an alarm company helps). Of course, in mounting the TurboKool over the escape hatch, the size of the opening would have to be reduced first - doable, as I did that for the Fantastic fan I put there.

To get water up to the roof there are a number of options, though it's likely the line will have to go at least some distance across the roof surface. In doing so, you can make hold down brackets out of thin sheet aluminum and glue or double stick tape (3M VHB) in place.

Assuming it's 1/2" PEX tubing, cut the line and cap it with one of these, a PEX quick connect End Stop.
Get it a Home Depot or most any home center or plumbing store. Make sure the end it cut squarely and then push it on firmly.

My swamp cooler was a standard item installed at the LD factory (1997) and since I almost exclusively dry camp for months at a time in warm weather, I just love it!  I have realized, though, that after several hot days in a row, I notice my freshwater gradually getting used up.  Of course... but normally I'm watching power levels instead of water levels!  I will go four months without once plugging in to electricity, and it works just fine.  Of course for others who use hookups, YMMV.

I always thought our vent openings were 14" square. Was I mistaken?

I just finished removing my PlaCool swamp cooler today from my 1997 TK. It works fine but I didn't want the maintenance hassle + fear of water on/in the roof.  If anyone around Sacramento CA is interested, I'd be happy to part with it to anyone who'd give it a happy home.  Not sure if it's worth putting in the want ads section...

We removed the swamp cooler from our 97 TK also for the same reasons, put an ad on the local Craigslist for $100, lucky new owner took it home for $75.
