Joan, Thank you for posting the link.  The Fed's keep finding unique ways to collect more money from tax payers and then find equally unique ways to waste it.
We have seen several NFS campgrounds that originally belonged to the National Park System.  NPS gave them to NFS to run because the parks were too small (less than 100 sites) to be turned over to NPS concessionaires.  NFS was running them with their concessionaires (smaller companies than those of NPS) and had spent a great deal of money improving the facilities.  Of course, the camping fees increased too; sometimes equivalent to a quality commercial park.
A number of state park systems have implemented fees that are in addition to their normal "day use" and "camping" fees.  In MI you need a "vehicle permit" to enter a state park.  For vehicles not registered in MI it costs $28 a calendar year (or $8 per day) but will probably be more this year.  If you tow, there is also a small fee for the towed car.  I can accept the MI fees as the funds go directly to the local park superintendent for use in improvements.  Also, it keeps their camping fees lower; $23 per night with electrical hookups.  We've also found this type of fee in GA, NE, and a number of other states.
It appears that the days of "inexpensive boondock camping" may be limited.
