Sorry if I missed something in an earlier  post,  but what does "in the doughnut hole" mean? Tom

There are a lot of rules, but basically, if you pay for Medicare Part D coverage, once you and the plan have paid $2,970 you are in the doughnut hole. Prior to that drugs cost you around 20% of actual cost. When in the doughnut hole you pay 47% for covered brand names, and 79% for covered generic drugs. Once you have spent $4,750 out-of-pocket for the year you are back out of the doughnut hole. You get in the doughnut hole pretty quick as the $2,970 is the retail cost of the drugs, not what you pay for them. These are 2013 rates, but you get the idea.
