For me, an essential reference for traveling in the West is "Mountain Directory West, for Truckers, RV and Motorhome Drivers." It lists "locations and descriptions of over 400 mountain passes and steep grades in eleven western states."  (There is also an Eastern edition that describes passes and grades in the East.)

The directory is sectioned by state, includes maps with major highways and is keyed to locate passes and grades followed by detailed descriptions of those sections indicated on the maps.

Mine is a 2002 edition so I'm not sure if this number for ordering a copy is still accurate:  800/594-5999.  If not, then try the website, mountaindirectory dot com .

I wouldn't leave home without this resource!

Did you know that you can also dial 511 when in a state and get current road condition? This is invaluable information, especially when traveling in the winter. We used it one year when we were stuck in Spokane until the first part of December to find out the current conditions over Siskiyous Pass.
