Windshield repair

On a road trip through WA when we encountered loose gravel as a result of road work on Hwy 97.  A semi traveling in the opposite direction threw a stone and it hit dead center leaving a star about the size of a nickel on our windshield.
Just wondering if anyone has had any luck with these companies that claim they can repair damage like this, or am I looking at total replacement?

We've had rock chips repaired.  You need to know that repairing a rock chip doesn't make it disappear; rather, it keeps it from spreading.
If you have windshield replacement with no deductible, you might want to get it replaced.  If you have a deductible, you'll have to decide whether a replacement is worth the money vs a repair.

Depends a lot on who is doing it.  We have had repairs done that you would be hard pressed to find if you didn't know where it was.

Have had same thing happen to me on that road also, and I have had them do the work and it does stop it from spreading to prolong it needing to be replaced. I have one right now on my Subaru between dime and nickle and had it done in Wash. before I moved here 4 years ago.

No insurance but some time on your hands? You can get a $10 or so kit to do it yourself. I've done several times and it's not hard.

Cindy, I've had windshield chips and "stars" repaired on my car(s) and on the motorhome; these things are so common that repairs are usually an inexpensive, easy fix that any auto glass place can do.  A Safelite shop repaired the rock dings on my motorhome's windshield; they did very good work, and the chip/crack is hardly visible. If the "star" is a big one, I suggest getting it repaired as quickly as possible; a crack can appear pretty fast.  If there's no local-to-you auto glass repair option, there's a Safelite in Reno:

In my experience, while a chip repair may not entirely hide the chip, it can greatly reduce its obtrusiveness. Given the low cost compared to a windshield replacement, I think it's worth a try. I've had chips repaired on both my Lazy Daze and my Honda Fit, and was very pleased with the results.

I used to own one of these companies that does "Free Chip Repair". Its free with qualifying insurance plans, and while it doesn't affect your insurance premiums, you are limited to a certain number of them every year, usually three. The truth is, most of these companies, mine included, used very basic equipment, and many don't guarantee their work. In fact, if the chip cracks or spreads while doing the actual repair, they'll claim to not be liable, leaving you with a replacement cost of the windshield. You can drastically reduce the appearance of a chip and restore the structural integrity of the glass if you have it repaired by someone who does quality work.

I would take your LD to a reputable glass shop. They tend to use higher quality equipment and resins, meaning you get a better finished result. Also, make sure they guarantee their work; most large auto glass companies will, but the smaller side-of-the-road ones will not.
