Re: home picture Reply #2 – September 02, 2013, 09:28:17 pm Yahoo Message Number: 142467Of course I'm not an expert but I don't think Gertie is very level but then again I may be wrong
Re: home picture Reply #3 – September 02, 2013, 09:39:28 pm Yahoo Message Number: 142468Gertie was VERY unlevel just then, as I had managed to maneuver her into a ditch while attempting to turn around, after my old GPS had led me twenty miles up a narrow dirt road. (I was a lot more trusting in those days!) With some spadework--I always carry a folding shovel--and a great deal of dumb luck, I was able to extricate the poor old girl, and fortunately there was no damage done to the undercarriage. Re: home picture Reply #4 – September 02, 2013, 09:56:08 pm Yahoo Message Number: 142469And since we're talking about homepage photos... as you can see, the new format allows much larger photos, but they are very wide: 1,020 x 250 pixels, to be exact. What's more, you have to leave about 400 pixels of space on the left side to allow for the group's name, which Yahoo overlays. Needless to say, almost none of the photos in the "Photo of the month candidates" folder are usable, because let's face it, who shoots in Super-Ultra-PanoramaVision? I went through my own photos looking for something I could crop to those 1,020 x 250 dimensions, but found only a couple. The Gertie-in-the-ditch picture I just uploaded only fits the ultrawide format because I Photoshop-cloned a lot of dirt and bushes to add space on the left.So to all who uploaded images to that folder: my apologies, but we can't use 'em any more. :-( I welcome submissions, but from now on they'll need to be 1,020 x 250, preferably with not-very-important content on the left, where the group name will go. I know that's tough, but it's what Yahoo has given us. I have enough wide photos stockpiled to get us to the end of this year, I think, but I'd rather see your images than mine up there. So think W-I-D-E and see what you can come up with. :-) If your camera has a panoramic mode, here's a good excuse to try it out. And anybody with an iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad should check out the Camera app's panorama feature--just turn it on and then sweep the camera across the landscape. Re: home picture Reply #6 – September 03, 2013, 12:13:07 am Yahoo Message Number: 142472Replying from my iPad, apologies in advance...Thanks for another apropos photo, Andy. I have several unresolved issues, such as the lack of s, including the LD Companion which I turn to regularly. Has any thought been given to a mass migration to Google or some other social-chat-type forum? I've struggled for some time with the lack of a decent search function both within the posts and on the group site in general. There is so much useful information out there that it would be a shame to lose folks and their valued input because of a bunch of .... forgive me ... Yahoos who can't get it together. Hopefully Ms. Mayer and crew will get it together before even more content becomes unusable but I'm losing confidence.
Re: home picture Reply #7 – September 03, 2013, 09:06:36 am Yahoo Message Number: 142474I have edited a picture and posted it in the folder for cover photos. First let me say it is not as good as the current photo and if we were still having the contest it would not pass muster. I would like to know if I sized it correctly? I fear that to make it long enough not only did I crop, but took to much resolution from what was left. I am using Nikon Capture NX2 to edit the photos and have not done to much of this kind of thing. If you want to take the conversation off forum e-mail me at johndacrema (at) yahoo (dot) com
Re: home picture Reply #8 – September 03, 2013, 12:31:10 pm Yahoo Message Number: 142476John, you can judge the results for yourself. :-) It's a great shot, but I had to crop it vertically, as you can see. Yahoo wants the picture to be 1,020 x 250 pixels; what you uploaded (or at least what ended up in the folder) was 1,020 x 415. That meant cutting off most of the sky to make it fit. It still looks good, but not as good as your original. This new ultrawide format is very hard to work with! I have lots of landscape shots in my collection that could be cropped to fit, but not shots with a Lazy Daze in them. Those tend to have the LD dominating the picture, making it too high to fit Yahoo's new format. I guess I'll have go train myself to take photos of Lazy Dazes from w-a-y back, with the LD on the right side of the frame. Anyway, thanks for responding so promptly--at least now we won't have to look at poor old Gertie in the ditch for the rest of September. :-) Everybody else, put on your creative caps and see what you can come up with that fits a 1,020 x 250 pixel format. Re: home picture Reply #9 – September 03, 2013, 07:25:41 pm Yahoo Message Number: 142483My photo software does not tell me the size as I crop so it basically dumb luck to get into the neighborhood. I posted a request on a photo forum to see if I am missing something (likely). Once I have the picture cropped, I now know how to see the size so the next pic will be correct. It seems that I should be able to build a box that has the correct ratio of hight to width and then superimpose that box over a given RAW photo to capture what I want, get the rule of thirds and all the fun stuff. What if we were to make two photos into one. Similar to what you did with your picture but not try to blend them. The left pic would be the logo and never change. Just kicking a can around, no need to reply.
Re: home picture Reply #10 – September 03, 2013, 09:08:07 pm Yahoo Message Number: 142484" What if we were to make two photos into one. Similar to what you did with your picture but not try to blend them. The left pic would be the logo and never change." I getcha. Then the actual photo would be a more reasonable shape, like 500 x 250. It's a good idea, John. I'll keep it in mind, if the ultrawide format gets to be too much of a pain. Right now I have three more wide images queued up, so that will get us through the end of the year. Hopefully by then we'll have some more submissions in the 1,020 x 250 format, but if not, we could fall back on your idea. Andy Baird http://www.andybaird.com/travels
Re: home picture Reply #11 – September 04, 2013, 04:31:29 am Yahoo Message Number: 142492I figured the technology out on my software. It is very easy to set the size once I learned to do it in the proper order.
Re: home picture Reply #12 – September 04, 2013, 08:58:40 am Yahoo Message Number: 142493Care to share? I got close to the needed size by repeatedly cropping. If I tried simply to resize, I got the original aspect ratio at a different resolution. If I separately entered vertical and horizontal, I got a distorted aspect ratio. As someone else posted, there OUGHT to be a way to pick a set of pixels, then position the rectangle over the image for the desired crop.Ken F in CO
Re: home picture Reply #13 – September 04, 2013, 11:55:26 am Yahoo Message Number: 142501In either Lightroom or Photoshop I would first crop to the desired aspect ratio. For a 1020x250 images, I would specify a custom cropping ratio of 10.2W X 2.5H. In Photoshop I tend to use the rectangular marquee selection tool. In Lightroom, I would just use the develop crop tool with a custom aspect ratio. Once I've cropped out the portion of the image that I want with that aspect ratio, then I would then resize that image to get the pixel dimensions I want. In Photoshop I would use image size. In Lightroom I would specify resizing on export, with a maximum dimension of 1020.HTH, Art
Re: home picture Reply #14 – September 04, 2013, 01:56:08 pm Yahoo Message Number: 142504In Photoshop (and probably Photoshop elements as well), you can set custom cropping dimensions and resolution (e.g., 1020 x 250 x 72 ppi). Save this as a custom tool if you like. Now when you drag a cropping rectangle on the image, it will automatically maintain the 10.2-to-2.5 aspect ratio. You can resize it as needed and move it around until you get the best crop. Then hit Enter, and the image will not only be cropped to those exact pixel dimensions, but changed to the resolution you specified.I've found this to be the easiest and most flexible way of creating a cropped image at a desired size, shape and resolution. Once you've made the settings, it's a quick two-step process: drag out your cropping rectangle and hit Enter to confirm. It's a lot quicker than going through multiple select/crop/Image Size steps.Andy Baird http://www.andybaird.com/travels
Re: home picture Reply #15 – September 04, 2013, 02:07:50 pm Yahoo Message Number: 142505Nikon Capture NX and NX2 work much the way Andy discribed. You select the crop tool, make sure "Fixed Aspect Ratio" is selected, select the custom, fill in the two squares to the right, then crop the photo. The tool remember the last custom box used when closed. .... My earlier problem was I was looking at another box that had to do with output resolution. John
Re: home picture Reply #16 – September 04, 2013, 02:25:12 pm Yahoo Message Number: 142506I've posted John's updated "Jumbo Rocks" photo, which fits the format with no cropping (well, on my part!). And Ken Fears has submitted two very colorful shots as well, so we're doing better than I expected. To avoid confusion, I deleted all the old, too-small images in the "Photo of the Month candidates" folder. And I added a description line under its title: "Photos must be 1,020 x 250 pixels to fit Yahoo's format."Thanks for the great photos, folks! Keep 'em coming.Andy Baird http://www.andybaird.com/travels
