Velvac Deluxe Mirror Heads on '06 LD?
Yahoo Message Number: 142370
Hello everyone,
We just got back from a 3000 mile trip across 5 states and, as Murphy would smile, one hour from home my left mirror collided with some other poor soul going the other direction on the Hood River Bridge (don't every take that bridge; our LD with mirrors out is wider than the lane and there are no warning signs or concern by the toll takers!).
So, I need a new mirror head and I was wondering if anyone has ever installed the newer Velvac Deluxe mirror heads, which have the full width convex lower mirror) to the mirror arm that comes with my '06 vintage LD?  http://www.ryderfleetproducts.com/velvac-714579/mirror-head-only-deluxe-with-convex-left-p-u80-714579

I can find an exact replacement with the stick-on convex mirror, but this newer version looks safer.  Just wondering if it works.

thanks,

Mike S.

I replaced my RH mirror several years ago (hit a truck's mirror on a narrow street).  It was such an improvement I bought one for the LH side.  Definitely worth the cost!

If the base is still good, you might contact Valvec customer support and ask if it is a direct replacement.  The link:  http://www.velvac.com/customer-support/customer-solutions ...................... .......................................... ................... ..............................................I put the dots to seperate the posts because the new format does not seem to recognize carriage returns .... ....... ..............

From Techsnoz Yahoo! Group.  Installing Replacement Velvac Mirrors on a Ford E450 Lazy Daze  01/31/2007  I was always bothered by the small wideangle mirror area on the stock Velvac mirrors that came with my 2001 26 foot Rear Bath. Velvac makes a slightly taller replacement mirror with an independently adjustable and much larger wide angle section. The mirrors reallyreduce blind spots and increase driving safety. For more information, visit www.velvac.com/mirrors.htm Stock Mirror  #714580 (Right)  #714579 (Left) Mirror   Height  Width  Flat Glass  Wide Angle Original 11.5" 8.5" 61 sq. in. 9 sq. in. Deluxe 13.0" 9.0" 62 sq. in. 30 sq. in. My rig has "long" mirror arms (about 20½ inches overall length) so I installed the "Right" mirror on the driver's side making the overall width about 117". If the "Left" mirror is installed on the driver's side, the overall width is about 124". The stock overall width is about 120". The "Left-Right" mirror swap works very well and reduces the overall width by about 3" from the original configuration if you have the "long" mirror arms. Some rigs have "shorter" mirror arms and on these, the "Right" mirror should be installed on the passenger's side and the "Left" mirror on the driver's side. Try it both ways and see which way works best for you. The install is simple. It only requires a 3/16" Allen wrench for the set screw on each mirror arm. Just loosen the set screw, pull up on the mirror head and off it comes. Remove the copper collar from the old mirror and place it inthe socket on the end of the mirror arm. Rotate the collar until the "split" lines up and the collar drops

I replaced the Velvac 2020 "Standard Heads' on my 2005 MB with the "Deluxe Heads" 4 or 5 years ago.  It was a simple task; probably took me less than 1 hour.  IMHO the difference between the Standard heads and the Deluxe heads is worth every penny.  I have heated/remote mirror heads and they were expensive.  It apears that the prices have come down significantly.
If the current Deluxe heads are like mine, the "mounting pin" on the bottom is not on the vertical center line of the mirror.  The normal way of mounting the heads is with the "widest side" of the head outwards.  However, if you reverse the mirrors and put the "left mirror' on the right side and the "right mirror" on the left side of your LD, the mirrors don't stick out so far.  (I believe that Velvac's product literature implies that you can't mount them this way.) As I recall it reduces the overall span about
8-inches.  The mirrors are still very useable in that configuration.  Of
course, how well they work in this configuration depends on the length of your mirror arms.  When I did mine, I first mounted the "right mirror" on the driver's side and tried it. Worked fine so I put the "left mirror" on the passenger side.
I know that a lot of other LD owners have mounted the Deluxe Heads in the same way.
