2001 RB TV

One of my children & her family were using our LD to go to Nova Scotia and the TV had problems.  I am looking at replacing it with a flat screen as many others have, and had a couple of questions:

1. Could someone post the dimensions of the opening of the TV cabinet in pre-flat screen era RB?  (I won't have access to the LD for a month or two, and want to plan ahead.)
2. I realize that the new TV will probably be outside of the cabinet, but am debating the size I want to install.  The 20" on p.4 of Terry Tanner's outstanding write up (HDTV.doc in Techsnoz) looks larger than I think we want to use.  What size have others installed?
3. Any comments or suggestions of LCD vs LED?  My understanding is that the LCD has a narrower field of view than the LED.  Is this a problem?
4. I am still looking, but currently thinking about a 16" Naxa TV:

Thanks Terry for taking the trouble to make and post such a complete & very useful document.
Thanks also in advance for any input to the decision making process.

Barry,
Having an '05 MB, I can't help you with dimensions.  But, here are some relevant facts:
You should look at the size of the TV case not the screen size.  The screen size, incidentally, is diagonal (going back to early CRT TV days when the screen was round but made to look rectangular with furniture framing).  I replaced my original 2005 MB's 15" flat screen by HD digital 19" LED/LCD TV that was physically smaller!
The LED TV is probably LCD TV backlit with LEDs.  Conventional LCD have been backlit with CCFL (cold cathode fluorescent) which tend to use more power.  If you boondock that may be a factor.

Thanks for the comments Alex.

Your Wikipedia reference makes the 'LED' TV sound better.

Barry, I would rake those measurements and put on piece of paper or cardboard and see what you think for the size as I don't think a Unit Dimensions (LxWxH): 15.75" x 1.9" x 12", is very big especially that 12" H part. The rest of your questions I don't know about.

Good suggestion Jan.  I will do that, but I'll have to wait until I get access to the LD to really see what a size looks like from the chairs.  Does anyone have the dimensions of the current analogue TV?  I realize it has a different aspect ration.

If you look back (May '13) (and in the photos section) you'll see my detailed post regarding installation of a flat screen TV in our RB. (You do not need the dimensions of the opening if you use my system).
In short - you install a wall style TV bracket (commonly available at Costco, Best Buy etc) inside the cabinet. I bolted mine on the inside right of the cabinet and drilled the holes right through to the cab over bed area. This affords a very strong mount. A 22 digital TV swings back nice and snug against the opening when not in use. We use a bungy cord connected to rear of the cabinet and hook it onto the back of the TV when traveling. Really has worked out nice. My earlier post and photos give more detail.
As an aside, we also installed a Jack antenna (less than $50 from CW) in place of the bat wing. Haven't used it enough to verify that it works better but it was highly recommended by Tom's Mobile RV Service.
Installation was easy if you are able to go up on your RV.

Thanks Todd.
It took a while to find the pictures, as Yahoo had switched to the new system & apparently insisted on downloading at least one picture from each folder for display when I clicked on the photos section.  This could be a real problem with a limited speed cell-phone data card internet.
The installation is essentially the same as Terry Tanner's in his HDTV.doc in the Techsnotz group and is what I hope to do.
However in both Terry's photo & your 1st & 3rd photos, the TV seems to be somewhat prominent in the cabin (overwhelming?).   We are not big TV watchers and hate to have the TV dominate the cabin area.  My thought was that a somewhat smaller TV would be enough for occasional watching of the news.  We were pretty happy with the recessed LD built-in TV despite some occasional desires to see it from the couch or the dinette.

I would still appreciate the dimensions of the current TV opening.

Thanks Lorna.
That is interesting.  Do you find the 18"x12" to be an adequate size for the RB?  I calculated the diagonal of an 18"x12" square to be 21.6".  Is this a 20" or 21" TV?  What brand?
Since I do not have an entertainment center, I could still use the dimensions for the opening in the existing TV cabinet for the non-entertainment LD.

Hi Barry -- It appears my previous response has been lost in an internet Bermuda Triangle, or most likely, swallowed up in the Yahoo changeling cesspool! After removal of the original TV, my 2003 RB w/entertainment center's dimensions are *roughly* 20" long x 13" high x 19" deep.  Larry Wade replaced the original TV with a Sharp flatscreen that measures 18" x 12".  ..........

Thanks Lorna.  I did and do appreciate your response.
The TV for the 'Non-Entertainment' RB is in an upper cabinet directly behind the driver seat.

The 22' doesn't overwhelm the cabin. It fits snugly up against the opening. The swivel bracket provides great latitude in exactly what position you store it in. It can be moved toward the bed so as not to interfere with the overhead cabinet door. For viewing, simply remove the bungy cord and position exactly how you want it. It also swivels up/down so you can angle it slightly for ideal viewing pleasure. Another benefit, additional storage now accessible inside the old cabinet.
One thing I didn't address is that this is not a 12V TV. So we only use it when we have shore power. That may not work for some folks.

Todd (I will be retrieving Bessie from storage tomorrow morning in preparation for a 10 week trip out East and will measure the opening for you).

Thanks Todd.  I appreciate your getting the TV opening measurements.
I may change my mind when I actually try a cardboard mockup of the TV dimensions in the LD.   However from the pictures, it does look awkward sticking out in the cabin.  I'm sure it works much better than the old fixed analogue TV, so I will have to balance aesthetics versus utility.

Where are you going in the East?
