The splined crank handle for the escape hatch

I am having a heck of a time finding a replacement. It appears the prior owner modified it with a plastic knob which is shot.
Went to the hardware store but they only had them to 5/16" diameter when the shaft is clearly 1/4"...maybe less.
My next move, unless anyone knows what fits, is to buy a small locking "vice grip" like pliers and snap it on as a turn handle.

Well stocked RV stores usually have them. The last one I bought came from Camping World. It was switched from a crank to knob, less likely to poke us in the back when entering or exiting the bunk.
