Battery Disconnect - Easy?

Other than using a wingnut to disconnect the battery, what do you use? I see these batter disconnects on Amazon which have a round knob (usually green) and there is a post version and a "side mount" version. Since I have the cables that connect to the bolts on the battery, there doesn't seem to be a good option for that. I guess I could take a "side mount" version of the thing , drill out the threads on one side then mount that to the negative bolt on the battery. Or it looks like I could take a post version of that disconnect and use a bolt/nut to connect the lead to the LD ground cable.

What have y'all done? I see this mysterious black box in my battery box which I thought might be a disconnect but I can't tell what it is - maybe a breaker? Or is there something super simple like pulling out a fuse inside the LD between trips?

Thanks.

this  is what I use: http://www.amazon.com/Blue-Sea-Systems-m-Series-Battery/dp/B00445KFZ2/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&qid=1375637128&sr=8-14&keywords=battery+disconnect+switch

this is what I would *NOT* use:http://www.amazon.com/NOCO-ID220S-6V-24V-Battery-Disconnect/dp/B006EH9WUC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1375637128&sr=8-1&keywords=battery+disconnect+switch

Hi Tom,

Could you give more details?  What is wrong with the Amazon switch?

Thanks.

Barry

First of all, I don't believe they are sparkless as any marine switch would have to be. Of course that does not matter it you have AGM batterys. Also I have seen at least two of these types of switches fail. Do to corrosion no doubt. The last one I saw was at a LD Northwest GTG last year. A member arrived and immediately sought me out and described severe electrical problems. I investigated and right away thought they had a loose battery connection. When we opened the hood and I saw one of those things I thought oh-oh. I removed it and they had no further problems. It was making intermittant electrical contact.
I don't think they are reliable over the long term Tom

It looks heavy duty...where did you mount it? From the positive side?

Mine, and those I have installed for others, are between the two batterys.
Like this: ground to neg. terminal batt #1. From + terminal batt #1 to switch. From switch to neg. terminal of batt #2. From + terminal of batt #2 to electrical system.

Beware. Any of these solutions simply disconnects the batteries. It does not disable the 12V house power.

If you have solar, and are in the bright sunshine. Be absolutely sure you disable the solar system FIRST, before disconnecting the batteries.  If you do not, and the 12 volt load is light, you may find your 12 volt system hit with very high voltage, capable of damaging things.  The batteries are the primary device that keeps the solar panels in check.  Be very careful when disconnecting the batteries.
Virtually any of the solar charge controllers will clamp the output voltage at 14.5V or less. This is higher than desirable for some items, but most RV-intended electrical items are designed to handle it.
