Odd marking on sidewall July 31, 2013, 11:39:28 am Yahoo Message Number: 141635I discovered a thumb print size cut/tear on my outside dually on the passenger side of my rig. I have had zero loss of air, no problems whatsoever with my tires. So was surprised to see this yesterday. Its at the base of the tread going into the sidewall. The best way to describe it is an outline of a thumb without apparent penetration. Its at the surface. Do I have a problem? A looming problem that should be addressed? Or is it ok until I get back to the lower 48. There are no tire places in Haines, AK. If I need to get a tire, I will order it from Costco in Juneau and it will come via ferry to me. If I'm doing this, I need to do it now. Would appreciate your advice. Thank you.Melinda 2011 27' MB named "Tiglax" (Aleut for eagle) http://wovenjourney.blogspot.com

If so, is the cord(s) cut? If not, you should be OK until get to a tire shop and have them dismount and inspect the tire. It could be damaged internally. Do keep an eye on the tire pressure and watch for bulging in the damaged area. You might want to apply some soapy water on the spot to see if there is a slow leak.Larry

Don't recall the company but he had a warehouse full of tires. Since you have to come through there it might be worth a stop.Steve S. Lazy Bones & Jiggs
Re: Odd marking on sidewall Reply #3 – July 31, 2013, 01:34:09 pm Yahoo Message Number: 141642Steve, There are places to get tires done (flats fixed, changed, rotated, etc) in Haines (such as the Canal Marine store), I can't buy tires in Haines. No one sells them. The local folks just order a tire from Juneau or drive to Whitehorse to get tires. Its a whole lot closer then Tok, which is about 437 miles from here. Things you learn when you least expect it - in how to get a tire in Haines...Thanks tho,Melinda
Re: Odd marking on sidewall Reply #4 – July 31, 2013, 01:42:34 pm Yahoo Message Number: 141643Larry, I can only pry up one edge, and I can't see well enough with a flashlight to tell much. I will try the soapy water trick and keep an eye out for bulging or any other changes. When I get back to the lower 48, will have them check it out for sure. Thanks!Melinda

Why not have someone replace it with your spare tire? Then have the damaged tire checked out when you are at a tire dealer? (I can tell you that myself, and probably most RVers, seem to carry that spare and never use it; this could be the right time to put it to good use. If you are heading towards Whitehorse, I can speak highly of the nice folks at Fountain Tire in Whitehorse. They replaced a carrier bearing (In Canada they call it a "steady bearing") for us back in 2005 and they were very reasonable at a time they could have charged a lot more. The Ford dealer in Whitehorse couldn't fit us in their schedule but arranged for us to have the work done at Fountain Tire.Use that spare and save yourself some possible problem on the road.Steve K.

I hadn't thought about the spare, and it may indeed be the time to use it. That can be done here in Haines. It may be unnecessary, but it eases my mind until I get the other tire checked. Thanks! And the tip for Whitehorse is superb. I will keep that little tip stashed away for the future. This time, I decided to take the ferry to Prince Rupert vs driving out - gas prices mostly made that decision, but I wanted to stick in Haines a little longer too...Melinda
