As we live in Southern California it's not impossible for us to drive out to Ridgecrest to have the tire extenders installed by Chuck...though it's not exactly close and really not on my bucket list for places to visit....what are the thoughts and opinions about having Chuck install versus, say, Discount tire?
My initial reaction is I would be confident with the inventor installing versus someone else but am I over-analyzing the installation and just save gas and time by having them installed at a reputable facility (maybe the same time I'm having the alignment done??)

Thanks for your help!!

Bill

Bill, do you ever take the back way to the Sierra up the 395 from the 15? (Hang at left @ Adelanto past the Cajon summit.) If so, then stopping over @ Ridgecrest is right on the way.
What better excuse than to roll up to Mammoth, Mono, Yosemite, et al?

When I purchased my LD a year and a half ago I knew I would need to put tires on it.  I wish I had gone to Chuck and done it all at once while I was

Chuck was great to work with.  In my previous post the time line was very compressed.  I ordered the extenders several months before they were installed.  I ordered them when I could not look at the RV.  When it came time for the install I made two or three  calls to Chuck.  I know he was busy, but always took the time to answer my questions.  He already had my money and I will likely not be ordering another set any time soon. Never the less, he generally made me feel I was the only customer he had.  From my reading here and on RV.net, I suspect that he does that for everyone.

We had a full set of Tireman stems on our "04. At some point during a maintenance visit one of the stems got damaged. Ordered a replacement from Chuck and had my local service shop install it. This company does all the local city and county fleet vehicles - that's why I go to them.
The tech was very impressed with the kit Chuck sent. Said it came with written instructions a blind man could follow. The stem was even indexed for orientation. He had never seen such a complete kit. The operative here is to have the work done by reputable shop that deals with trucks:-)

Let's clear this up, the Tireman did not invent extended stems. It's becoming an urban legend that he did.
Dual wheels have been used for close to a century and large truck tire shops have been bending extended stems for many decades.
Chuck has the stems made and then packages them. You can also get them from Borg Tire.
I have had extended stems installed succesfully at both Costco and Discount Tire.
Talk with the manager first to make sure they know what they are doing. The various kits come with detailed instructions.
It isn't rocket science.

Hey Larry,
But when you got them installed at Costco, did you get free donuts? Or were you at the mercy of the sample people?;-)
What a legend. folks drive hundreds of miles to have tires and stems installed. How do the rest of us get by?

We had new tires installed last spring at Les Schwab.  They carry solid extended stems and I had them installed.  I have used Les Schwab for years and am a satisfied customer.  Since they carry the stems and install them on a regular basis, I had no problem trusting them to do the job right.  I also know (from experience) that if anything goes wrong, I can visit any Les Schwab and they will fix it.

As usual, YMMV.

My very poor experience with Chuck C. is well known -- won't repeat it here.  Just to put your mind at ease Bill, there are just as many of us with Borg stems  out there as Cavito acolytes.  No need to drink the Kool-Aid!!
A Borg Tire representative will likewise talk to you on the phone, email you and ship stems with detailed, graphic instructions to you for installation by any reputable tire shop.  I've had my Borg stems since 2006, through two sets of tires.  They were installed by a Goodyear dealer that services truck fleets.  My front tire Borg stems were also successfully re-installed by Discount Tires when I recently purchased two new front tires.
C'Mon folks, extended stems are a great convenience, but they are not unique to Lazy Daze motor homes, and they are not manufactured by Chuck Cavito.  Frankly I'd rather save the gas money and have them installed locally.  But then, there's those darn donuts.  Are you sure they weren't brownies, Steve?!!!

The money saved on not making a 200 mile round trip to scenic Ridgecrest can buy a lot of donuts, even if free overnight parking is provided.
Not to diss Ridgecrest, my grandfather owned a butcher shop there in the 1950s and early 1960s. Visiting him and my step-grandmother provided a lifetime's worth of quality time there.

One nice feature of Ridgecrest is the Maturango Desert Museum.
If you are interested in seeing a canyon full of petroglyphs, located in an isolated area of the China Lake Naval Weapons Center, take one of the museums tours. Well worth the time and effort.

I have ordered a set of Tire-Man extenders and checked with Chuck for a good tire shop recommendation in Denver, but he didn't know of one.  Les Schwab doesn't seem to operate in this area.  Larry has had good luck with Discount Tire and Costco in his area, but I wonder if anyone In the group has a good shop in the Denver metro area they can recommend.  Or, just as important, one to stay away from.

Thanks! Jeanne

Jeanne, I've always used the Discount Tire at 92nd and Wadsworth in Westminster and had good service. I have not had them put on new extenders; I am still using the original LD-provided ones. I have always stood nearby when the valve extenders were reinstalled with new sets of tires to ensure they go on right and tight.

Did you purchase Les Schwab tires, if so which ones? Or did you have them order something else?

Decided to drive out to Chuck's to get the work done; was a sort of shakedown trip anyways and have added a couple of items to my warrant list for LD because of it.
Drove by myself so hard to locate some squeaking from somewhere above me, even on smooth roads (in fact it disappeared at one point on very rough roads).

Spent the night hooked up at Chuck's shop...super easy...

If I ordered the valve extenders could a local tire shop do the job or do I need to go the Ridgecrest? Right now I have steel braided extenders but I am considering upgrading.

Ted,

I used to use those stainless braided extenders. One day I had one come apart in my hands with little effort (It was new). I was very lucky that it didn't come apart while traveling. I threw all I had away at that point and started checking the tire pressures the hard way until I got the solid brass extenders.

Any competent tire shop can install the long metal valve stems (note that the product that the Tireman sells are NOT extenders!).  We had ours installed at the Goodyear dealer in Blythe, CA.
