Should I get Straight Talk Unlimited or Millenicom for my iPhone and
Yahoo Message Number: 136744
We need to change our phone wireless carrier soon as our old contract with Sprint runs out.  Since we shall travel almost exclusively in the Western United States I really want to use Verizon towers.  I understand that both Straight Talk $45/mo. Unlimited and Millenicom $69/mo. unlimited are reselling Verizon bandwidth (wondering if I am correct here).  Anyway I have an external outdoor antenna and amplifier like Andy Baird's and would like to use it as we boondock often. Obviously I would prefer to pay only $45/mo., however it seems like I am missing something.
We have the following Apple products:  iPad 2, Apple Laptop, iTouch 3 and iTouch 4 as well as an iMac.
Sure could use some help here as I am in a Daze, but not a Lazy one yet!

Thanks for any help I can get.

You're talking apples and oranges:  Straight Talk has cell phones; Millenicom is strictly Internet service.
While Straight Talk says they have "smartphones,"  I don't know if their data plan is as complete as you'd get with one of the major carriers; i.e., can you access all websites with it, or just a limited number of sites such as weather?  Can you download and use lots of different apps?  Can you use it as a wireless hotspot for connecting tables and computers to the Internet?  I don't know the answer to these questions, but I'm guessing that Straight Talk smartphones aren't "full featured" smartphones like you'd get with Verizon.  Hopefully, someone who has actually used one of these phones for data service can comment.
If you want to use Millenicom for Internet service and want to stay with Verizon, then you want their 3G/4G Hotspot plan (the 3G/4G Unlimited is through Sprint).  I'm using this plan right now, and have been very please with it.  But Millenicom does not offer cell phone service.

My Millenicom $69/mo plan is Data only.
"Facetime" works, but only to Facetime users.
...so I also have a basic phone for basic calls.

As I travel full-time will offer what works best for me: Cellphone voice service - Have unlocked Iphone 4S with AT&T pre-paid card $100 for 1000 minutes. Not locked into a contract and whatever minutes are left after a year roll-over. I don't talk on the cellphone much.
Cellular data service - Millenicom Hotspot $70 month for 20GB 3G/4G. Have all 3 devices (Iphone, Ipad, Laptop) connected all the time for only one data plan. No contract and no overage fees. Verizon service.
With my super antenna and amp have seen speeds as high as 18MBPS download.

Go to HowardForums.com and scroll to prepaid carriers -- Straight Talk.  It is the best site for Straight Talk info around.  Post your question there and you will get answers.
The "unlimited" on ST is up for discussion. It really is 2g but most people don't go over that in a month.  And if you do go over they throttle or call the offender.

We have been full timing for over 4 years and spend most of our time out west. We are in Texas for several months currently which is unusual for us. We stared with a VZ cell phone and datacard. Now use a Millenicom datacard on the VZ network.
We just switched to Ting.com which I read about on Howard Forums. You can find my post about the service here.

Bear in mind my last paragraph is an attempt at humor.
We will see how it works as we head back west but so far I am very pleased. After our first months bill we ended up paying less than we paid per month with VZ. With VZ we had a flip phone with 450 minutes, no text and no data. We now have two smart phones and are texting and using data. I am sure we will use a bit more over time but I really like this company and their business model.
I considered the Straight Talk plan with the one Samsung smart phone they have on VZ but decided on Ting instead.

Doug, if you happen to be a member (or sign up) of Consumer Reports you might check out why they rated Straight Talk as tops (for cell service if I remember right) after doing the kind of extensive research and testing they do. The info is in a recent article they put out.

Thank you so very much for all the help.  I can now see how every individual might make a different choice.  I am now leaning towards Millenicom HosSpot since we mainly use almost ll data and then a prepaid card since we talk so little for now.  I shall sleep on it, but just wanted to say a big "THANKS".

One other thing to consider re Straight Talk. When I spoke with them they confirmed that your coverage is what they show on the prepaid coverage map which I believe doesn't include their extended coverage. I did not ask them if they roam on any other networks.
I opted for Ting because you roam on the VZ prepaid network. Of course, it remains to be seen what my experience will be as we head back west.

I don't understand why the contract running out means you have to change plans; is Sprint cutting your service? I thought you could continue on as long as you wished without a contract.

"I don't understand why the contract running out means you have to change plans; is Sprint cutting your service?"
I think it's more a case of the contract running out giving one a chance to ditch Sprint--a carrier with poor nationwide coverage--and change to a carrier better-suited to RVing, namely Verizon.

Yes, Andy hit it right on the nose.  I really need to have a Verizon connection if possible.  Thanks again to all!
