Visit to LD Mothership

Hello all!
My wife and I are planning our first trip to LD in CA in mid-February. (we live in FL)

We've contacted LD to let them know we plan on coming.

Anyone have any suggestions/pointers for us?  And about how long should be allow for this initial visit?  (We plan to order a new LD later,  for delivery around 1-1-15, or maybe a little later if we go to the Australian Open first in early 2015.)
If the question has already been answered, please point us in the correct direction.  (I searched, and didn't find it...)

Thanks much.

Eileen and Bob

I'm sure Steve and the crew will be outside, with the band, to announce your arrival...in your dreams :-)  i think you will find going to the Mothership to be a unique shopping experience, in a positive way.
If you are serious about buying, spend the whole day there, breaking mid-day for lunch nearby. They will have suggestions on where to eat.
Hang out in each model you are interested in. Try the bed and/or bunk and see how it feels, walk through cooking a meal, sit on a sofa or chair for a half hour, act like you are actually traveling in it. Each model has its own characteristics, many that are not immediately noticeable.
LD doesn't care how long you stay and will not bother you unless you want help or information You are going to spend a lot of time inside whatever model you decide on so don't rush it.

Have fun

--- Agreed; second looks can make a difference in the final model selected. Additionally, understand that not all of the rig sizes and plans (8) offered will be available as models on the floor; the showroom is small, and the "viewable" models vay in number and type.

You might consider timing your visit to coincide with a meeting of the Lazy Daze Caravan Club. You would be welcome to visit...I believe Saturdays mornings are the usual time for visitors to view the interiors of many of the assembled group (hint: the LDs with their porch lights on are the ones that would welcome you).
You will also have a chance to see units that are in use and speak with their owners. Every model that LD makes will be there, so even if one or two units are not on the showroom floor, you won't miss any.
Take a look at the LD Caravan webpage...you'll find all the information you need to plan a visit.

Eileen and Bob:  When you arrive and head for the showroom you might ask to speak with Todd.  Steve, the owner, may or may not be there.  Todd would be more likely to show you around the factory, if they still do that.   Vince is the guy that runs the shop and he is very helpful in answering any questions about how they are built.  We never have found a good restaurant around the area, but I'm sure Todd could make a recommendation.  Enjoy the day.    Gale

There are plenty of good places to eat in the Pomona area.  If you like Mexican food, I would highly recommend Espiau's at 109 Yale Blvd., Claremont.  Its 4 miles north of LD, and very easy to get to from there.  We have been eating at Espiau's for about 50 years, and even though we now live in Arizona, we never make a trip to California without eating there.  Their Mexican salad is unlike anything you will see at any other restaurant.  The dressing is the secret, and many people have attempted to duplicate it (including us), but the original is still the best.

Oh my gosh... either you don't care for Mexican food or you forgot to ask at the Mothership's front desk.

My recommendation would be:

To original poster...
As for how much time to allow, two days is minimum. You did not say what the means of transportation will be used from Florida nor did you say if you will have a vehicle in Montclair. There's an airport nearby (Ontario) and the Mothership will pick you up in their shuttle upon your arrival. They can also direct you to nearby accomodations. Best to relax and enjoy, it's a unique experience, make the most of it.

For any one wanting visit one of the Caravan Clubs Caravans, when you arrive, look up the Past Tents group. You will find it has many of the Yahoo LD forum members, self included.
http://www.lazydazecaravanclub.org/ Membership is free and all LD are welcome to attend.
LD Caravans are the only place where every floor plan will be represented

I would recommend two things:

1.  Take a camera and take lots of pictures; both inside and out.  With  multiple models to see, things soon become a bit confusing.  As you take the  pictures make notes of what they represent; i.e "Mid-bath, upper rear left  side storage compartment."  You can put these notes with fhe things outlined  in Item 2.

2.  Take a clipboard with a pad of paper and a tape measure (12 ft is good).
Use the paper to make sketches of things of particular interest like internal cabinets, etc.  Measuring dimensions and adding them to the sketch is a good idea.  Many persons have posted to this forum dimensions for internal and external storage.  However, LD has changed the storage configurations over the years and it isn't always obvious when the changes were made.  As an example the utilization of the outside storage compartments on my 2005 MB and those on recent MB's is quite different.
Also some of the internal cabinets are a bit different.   (I prefer a "quadrile" ruled pad of paper for this purpose, as it helps with the sketches.)

You will enjoy your trip to the factory.  Spend lots of time there.

I don't know if this will fit in with your schedule, but the SoCal Caravan Club is having an outing Feb 20-24 at Vista, CA, which is south of L.A. near Camp Pendleton.  This is a new venue for the club, so I can't say for sure how many rigs will be there (especially with the recent pop in gas prices), but I think it's safe to say at least 50.  If you have the time, you could combine a visit to the factory with a mini-trip to Vista.  The Club members are always happy to show their rigs to potential buyers and eager to extol the virtues of their own choice of floorplan.  Here's a link to the Club website.

Just click on the link on the upper left side that says "Vista" for all the details.  And, just to add to previous comments about factory visits, don't be turned off if they leave you completely alone to wander in and out of the coaches.  It truly is a "negative pressure situation.
If you want some help, however, someone will stay with you as long as you want.  Happy shopping, and hope to welcome you at Vista.  -- Jon ('06 TK "Albatross")

--- The "negative pressure situation", as Jon put it, is a big plus for most people; it certainly was for me when I visited (then bought) in 2003. No sales push, no chatter, no following a prospective customer around, getting in the way, and being a general nuisance! Ed did appear in the showroom after his lunch, but I suspect that it was only because somebody noticed a then "middle-aged" woman under one of the rigs checking out the tank positions. Ed is long past making personal appearances, but the tradition of leaving visitors in peace to wander through the models is still in play at the factory.
Shopping for and buying the LD was the easiest, most-straightforward, least-hassle, no hidden agendas, what-you-see-is-what-you-get transaction I've ever done, but, as ever, YMMV.

No, there are typically no tours at caravans, because camping at them is restricted to LD owners and guests. However, you'll be welcome to visit the caravan, and ask individuals if they would be willing. My advice would be to arrive wednesday early afternoon or thursday morning - fewer rigs, but also no events planned that would likely interfere. Stop at the host tent and introduce yourselves, and they will probably make a CB announcement. Since tours are rare at caravans, be patient for folks to clean up and straighten before inviting you in. To avoid appearing to be 'canvassing the rigs' for ulterior motives, it pays to have some idea to mention as to which floorplans most interest you, range of years, etc.

As Larry noted in his posting, there is no particular tour time.  Someone else mentioned look for yellow porch lights on as a sign of invitation, but frankly I've never heard of that in all the Caravans we've been to.  Really, it's just a matter of showing up and asking around.  There is a "host tent" that is set up, usually near the entrance to any Caravan venue, that is manned by volunteers who rotate throughout the day.  Just go there and introduce yourselves and let them know what you'd like to do.  They can get on the CB and russle up a gang of folks who will be happy to give you tours.  I think showing up on a Thursday or Friday would be preferable to Saturday.  Saturday mornings are devoted to a "washer toss" competition that draws the majority of attendees, and in the afternoon there is the general meeting that everyone attends;  thus, a Saturday visit might cut down the number of available rigs for viewing.  But, if that's your only day, give it a shot anyway.  Be assured, your request is not unusual and you will be welcomed.  Heck, I've shown our rig to strangers who hailed me at a pullout on the Tioga Road as snow was beginning to fall, and elsewhere around the country, just as many other LDers have done.  This cult loves to show off!  -- Jon ('06TK "Albatross")

My wife and I are returning home from the Mothership today. They only have two models in the show room and one of them ( a 27' RB) had been sold.  The other is a 31' unit. We were very disappointed in that we had called a  week prior to our visit and were told there was an RB and a MB that we could see. It turns out the MB was a model being shipped to Japan and was 5" narrower that the standard MB. That unit was not in the showroom but in the paint shop so we had to be escorted by Todd while viewing it. The narrower MB felt cramped and it was hard to imagine how it would feel with another 5" of width. Todd was as accomodating as he could possibly be showing us another MB (standard unit) in production without seats and appliances, but  again leaving a lot to the imagination. The trip was not a total loss though, since we got to see how LDs are assembled and did get to spend a lot of time in the RB.
My advice is to find out beforehand exactly what they will have in their showroom when you get there.

Flurries definitely were beginning to fall, but nothing was sticking yet.  And yes, that was the first time we ever met!  You had cut short your trip in the Eastern Sierras and were westbound taking your sick pooch home to your vet.  I believe that turned out all right.  The guy who toured our coach right there on the spot was looking for a used one, and your were then contemplating selling, so you exchanged info.  Happily, you decided against it!

And, yes, I'm glad that I decided not to sell the LD, or I would never have had the opportunity to meet all the *great people* that I have! ;-)

Quick note to than everyone for their input.
We didn't have *anywhere* enough time allowed in this trip for a good LD visit, so we've scratched that part, and will get it rescheduled when we can devote more time to it.

(Primary purpose of trip is father-in-law's 90th Bday in AZ...)

Thanks again to all..!

Best,
