Recommendations needed for Washington DC (city navigation notes)

the roads in DC confuse a lot of people.  The center around which are four quarters. The Capitol is the center, and all the street signs state which quarter (NW, SW, NE, SE) of the city your in,  The north-south start with North Capitol St and South Capitol St.  They number up the further one travels from the Capitol.  The east west streets go up by letter, then alphabetically by one, then two, then three syllable names.  The dividing line to the east of the Capitol is East Capitol St, to the west is National Mall bordered by Constitution and Independence Av.  The state streets were radiate from the Capitol but turned into a diagonal cut throughs.
If lost go to the intersection of a numbered street and letter street. Then head off in the correct direction.  If your sense of direction fails you, you will be only a block or two out of your way.
Washington has building height restrictions near the mall and White House so handheld GPS units should generally work well as compared to my lost adventures in "The City" (I married a New Yorker).
