Two Nice Motion Sensing Lights - One For Out and One For In
Yahoo Message Number: 135340
In the last week, I've added two motion-sensing battery powered LED lights to problem areas around the house with no wheels. Both of them would have been useful around Arby as well. Both lights have ambient light sensors so they only turn on when you need them.
The first is a Dorcy floodlight on sale now at Cyberguys for under $20. It is sealed and can be mounted outside. Three D batteries are supposed to last one - two years in normal use. There is only one LED but it is very bright with a good spread. It has a 30ft 180 degree motion sensing view. I mounted it to a palm tree pointed so it looks directly at the back right corner of the house. This way it covers both approaches to the back door and will also fire up when I open that door from the inside.

The second light is intended for use indoors, has slim-line design with a pivoting head and 6 LEDS and would be great for inside an RB wardrobe or in the bath area. I mounted mine on the weather-protected upper corner of the main house entry door. Now I don't have to find the right key in the dark or fumble for the keyhole. The mount is a "cradle" type and the light just drops in. When I go out for the paper before dawn, I grab it and take it to the driveway with me.

Isn't technology grand for lazy people?

Thanks for the tips, George! I just ordered one of the Rite Lites for my rig's entryway; I'm planning to mount it so that it automatically lights up the interior steps as I enter the coach. (I already have solar-powered lights mounted on the retracting exterior steps, in addition to a solar-powered light above the keyhole.)

"I forgot to mention that I always mounted things like this in the rig with 3M Command Strip 'refills.' "
The key word here is "in." :-) My experience with 3M Command Adhesive strips has been that they are great for indoor use... but if used on the rig's exterior, after about a year the foam hardens, disintegrates, and the adhesive lets go. I use regular Command Adhesive a lot inside my rig, but I wouldn't mount anything I cared about on an exterior surface with it.
Now, 3M does make a supposedly weatherproof Command Adhesive version--it's pale blue instead of white. But the risk of having exterior items such as lights fall by the wayside while I'm driving is enough to dissuade me from trusting any version of Command Adhesive for exterior use. Instead, for exterior mounting I use 3M Dual Lock or 3M VHB (Very High Bonding strength) tape. In ten years, I've never had either one fail in exterior use.

Oh, I agree completely, Andy. I don't trust Velcro adhesives outside either.

By the way.. If you're ordering the 2nd light from Amazon, the first (Dorcy) is also available from Amazon as well for about $5 less and you might be able to combine them into a single shipment to save a few $$.. Also -- if you search on Amazon for the "dorcy flood lite" you'll get a number of responses -- make sure you choose the 41-1071 model as mentioned above -- there's also a 41-1072 model which may be a prior year model since it does not show up on the Dorcy website at all..

Here's a direct link. It's currently $16.88 with free shipping for Prime members.

I like the looks of this one better than the Dorcy, reviews are just as good too, though it costs a buck or two more:

For me, though, I'd be looking for one that is 12 volt DC. A little more work to install, but no hassle with batteries. A switch will be needed to disable exterior motion lights while on the highway, but battery operated lights will have to be disabled or removed while driving as well.

If you are interested in getting one of the aforementioned Fulcrum motion sensing lights that runs off a pair of C batteries, they normally sell on amazon for $21.75/ea but today Amazon will have them as part of their daily "lightning deals" section starting at 9AM PST for some (hopefully) deep discounted amount.. Check that link after 9am PST today to see if it is of more interest.. Keep in mind that I believe you're only allowed to get one of each item under the Lightning deals section -- at least that is what I gather.

The link to the Amazon Fulcrum page is here : http://tinyurl.com/c2qc3v7

By the way.. There is at least one other RV related item in today's lightning deals section on Amazon.. This one : http://tinyurl.com/csjd3lt

might be good for people that need help with traction perhaps.. but that deal does not start until 6PM PST today...

Just passing these along.. I've obviously got no financial interest in either..

Here's an idea for a better deal. The "Rampage 7702 Grip Track" (traction mat) Rick mentioned is currently $32.92, and that's on sale at half price. For the same thirty bucks, you can buy a bag of ten Lynx leveling blocks at almost any Walmart. In mud or snow, they are the most effective traction aid I've ever used (and I've tried many kinds). And unlike the Rampage mats, they can be also used as leveling blocks. :-) If you're going to spend thirty bucks, the Lynx blocks give you more utility for your money.

No complaint from me Andy! I own several sets of the Lynx blocks but passed this along just-in-case it appeals to someone.. :-)

By the way.. I just ordered one of the Fulcrum lights -- not specifically for LD use but at $16.49 it seems like a good deal for home use -- in my case for backyard use.. Just keep in mind that it needs a bit of extra sealing for outdoor use per one of the comments.. The only issue is that you can only get one and it is in silver -- not white..

Act quick.. You've got about 15 minutes.. You'll need to click on the "view lightning deal" link on the far right edge of the screen which will pull up a new page -- scroll down that page a little and you'll see the light listed under lightning deals section and click on "Add to cart".. then checkout quickly!
