The good news: Consumer Reports experts are finding that GPS apps can be just as capable stand-alone navigation devices. The even better news: Garmin is slashing prices for its smartphone apps and traffic services the year-end holidays. The company announced price cuts of up to 40 percent for its Navigon navigation software for both iPhones and Google Android-powered smartphones. The holiday promotionwhich lasts until Jan. 5allows users to download and navigate U.S. maps for $30 instead of $40 (Android) or $50 (iPhone). For both U.S. and Canadian maps, Garmin will charge about $40 for its app on either iOS or Android platforms. Garmin's live traffic update service will also be discounted from $20 to $15. Its StreetPilot app for iPhones also drops $10to $50 for U.S. and Canadian maps, $40 for U.S. onlyduring the holiday promotion. The price cuts also extends to its recently released Navigon app for Windows Phone 7 which was available for $30 last month. But I don't count on it for total GPS navigation. If my Garmin can't find what I am looking for, I find what I am looking for on my Droid and then punch in the address in my Garmin GPS. The Garmin is easier for my driver to hear and understand. It works in places that the Droid can't find cell service.Denise
