Thanks for the info. The inverter is plugged into a 12V outlet. I will give it a try. What I have in mind will only take a few minutes. I do carry spare fuses.

Speaking of inverters....can someone tell me what THEY use for wattage....what do I need for the TV, TV with DVD, VCR connected to TV, for the computer, etc, etc, etc. I have three places to plug in a converter, my dash, over my refer, and in the bathroom. Your opinions would be appreciated.

 There is no single answer to your question . . . as usual for this sort of thing, it depends. There's lots of good info on line, for a start, see:

From your question, it looks like you are thinking about smaller inverters of the type you will plug into a "cigarette lighter" style socket. IIRC, the outlet in the LD is limited to about 10 amps (?), so using the formula (PIE) Power = I or current X E or voltage, and assuming I'm correct about that 10 amp limit, you will be limited to a total of 120 watts available from your inverter when plugged into an outlet. Many small inverters are rated from more, say up to 400 watts or so. But to access that extra power they will need to be wired to the battery bank directly or with larger fuse and wiring.

 So to determine what you can actually run with a given inverter, you will need to determine the power consumption of each device. The TV, DVD, or VCR will have a label saying how many watts it uses. Sometime watts are given as "VA" (volt amps). Add up the power needs of each device you intend to run at the same time. Then add whatever percent needed for the efficiency of the inverter plus a bit more for wiggle room.
 Also note that some inverters and generators are rated in both peak or surge power and in average power. Many devices will consume more power during start up, and the surge power accounts for that - - hopefully.
 When I mentioned connecting an inverter directly to the battery, I'm assuming the inverter is fused. Never permanently wire anything to the batteries without installing an in-line fuse to protect the wiring.

The best way to do that is to get a KILL A WATT P4400 reader.  It's a small digital gauge that plugs in the socket, then you plug the appliance into it.  Reads volts, amps, watts, volt-amps, frequency, power factor, and kilowatt hours.  You can buy them at Amazon and other places.  You can leave it in the circuit for long-term monitoring.
